Charlie Crist Looks Poised to Run for Congress

Posted
Charlie Crist looks ready to make his next foray into the political world on Tuesday, when the former Florida Governor will reportedly announce his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.

An advisor to Crist, Kevin Cale, sent out a press release on Friday stating that a "major announcement" will be made by the former Gov. on Tuesday. Late on Friday, Cale retweeted a link to Tampa Bay Times reporter Charlie Frago's story on the matter with the message, "Crist for Congress? The answer might come Tuesday."

The announcement will be made in St. Petersburg, which contains the 13th Congressional District. That district's map looks set to change to a majority Democratic demographic following a redesign of Florida districts. U.S. Rep. David Jolly (R) is vacating the seat following the change to the district's map. Jolly is now running for U.S. Senate.

Crist, who served as Florida's 44th Governor from 2007 to 2011, declined to run for re-election. Instead, he made a run for outgoing U.S. Senator Mel Martinez's seat. Crist was favored by the Republican National Committee and had strong poll showings on the outset, but he lost following a surge of support toward Marco Rubio from Tea Party voters.

He last ran for office in 2014, when he campaigned for Governor in the 2014 election as a Democrat and narrowly lost to Gov. Rick Scott.
