Environment June 8 Last Day to File Claims Related to BP Oil Spill

Posted

BRADENTON — June 8 is the last day one can file a claim for economic loss related to the BP/Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico oil spill from 2010. The Court Supervised Settlement Program, which has paid almost $5 billion in claims to more than 62,000 businesses and individuals in the region, will not accept any new claims moving forward from that day.

The claims that currently have yet to be processed are over 70,000, and are estimated to take two to three years for the CSSP to go through.

While most of Florida's Gulf coast did not experience direct environmental damage from the spill, many argue that there has been a widespread public perception that the damage to the region was worse than it was in reality.

As a result, many west Florida businesses are seeking claims due to lost profits from a decline in state income staples such as tourism and seafood demand, which have been attributed to the disaster.

More information on the deadline and claim qualifications can be found at the Deepwater Horizon Claims Center.
