John Colon Appointed to Fill Vacant Seat on Manatee School Board

Posted
BRADENTON – Gov. Rick Scott appointed John Colon of University Park to the Manatee School Board's lone empty seat on Friday. The appointment of Colon fills a vacancy left by Dr. Mary Cantrell, who died of cancer in July.

A senior vice president of investments at Wells Fargo, Colon is also a member of the United Negro College Fund and was appointed to the State Board of Education 2013.

Colon has resigned from that seat to take his new position in the school district. The new board member will be sworn in before the next workshop on Tuesday, September 8.

Board Chair Bob Gause said in statement, "I have known John for eight years and I am looking forward to having him as part of our leadership team."

Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene said, "I welcome Mr. Colon to the School Board and I look forward to working collaboratively with him and his fellow School Board members to enhance and expand educational opportunities for the children of Manatee County."

27 people had applied for the vacant position. Colon is now set to serve on the board until November 15, 2016.
