7. Citizen Comments
– Sheryl Wilson, Chair of the Democratic Party said she was confronted by county employees while campaigning at the Supervisor of Election facility, and told that the county had banned signs from being on County property. Wilson said some of the county employees had wrestled the signs out of citizens hands. She cautioned the county administrator to obeying the citizen's civil rights and said if were to happen again she would take action against the county. Wilson said citizens have freedom to assembly and freedom to speak, and both were violated.
– Rodney Jones said he echoed Willson's comments. Jones said wrestling signs from citizens creates a liability for the County. "You are stewards of the community." Jones said the action was inappropriate and there needs to be consequencesÉ that no one is above the law.

45. North County Aquatic Facility – The item was not expected to be on the agenda. DiSabatino and Smith were furious county officials would spring the decision to build a pool (called aquatic park) a considerable distance away from Palmetto. Palmetto had been promised a pool for over a decade. Bustle, Benac, Baugh and Whitmore said they remember the proposed pool would be north of the river but not necessarily in Palmetto. Palmetto Mayor Shirley Grover Bryant appeared before the commission to remind them of what the deal really was. Bryant said, "Not all that has been said up here today is correct." Manatee County Commissioners eventually voted to move the item to a Work Session in the near future, after they realized they ware misinformed on many circumstances pertaining to the issue. – Approved, Unanimous (full story)
