BRADENTON – Manatee County students made slight gains in Florida Standards Assessments scores, according to results released this week by the Florida Department of Education.

57 percent of students achieved proficiency on math exams, an increase of 1 percent from last year’s scores. Grades 3 and 5 each went up by five points. Students also saw increases in science test scores with 49 percent of fifth-grade students achieving proficiency–up 6 percent–while 46 percent of eighth-graders received a Level 3 or above on the statewide science test and biology end-of-course exams. Biology end-of-course exams for 6th through 12th grade were flat at 71 percent proficiency.

While third grade reading scores dipped by one point this year, overall reading test scores jumped by 1 percent, with 51 percent of Manatee County 3rd through 10th graders achieving proficiency on their state reading tests. In English Language Arts, students in grades 5, 8 and 10 all raised their Level 3 or higher percentage by four points.

"We saw improvements across the board and I am proud of our students, teachers and school communities," said Cynthia Saunders, Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services, who will serve as interim superintendent when Dr. Diana Greene leaves at the end of the month. "I am especially proud that we made advancements academically even in light of some serious challenges, such as Hurricane Irma and concerns about school security in the wake of the Parkland tragedy."
