Spotlight on Education: Two USF Honors College Students Awarded Frost Scholarships, Will Study at Oxford

Posted
TAMPA – USF Honors College students Ricci Allen and Maie Khalil are among a very select group of students statewide awarded Frost scholarships for full-time graduate study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The Frost Scholarship Program provides funding for top students from the State University System of Florida to study for a full year in master’s courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics ”STEM“ fields. With two recipients, no state university has more Frost winners this year than USF.

Both Frost scholars have an impressive undergraduate record at USF. Allen, a native of Parrish, Fla. and graduate of Southeast High School in Manatee County, will earn dual bachelor’s degrees in biomedical sciences and psychology in May. Khalil, a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School in Iowa, earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences, summa cum laude, in December. Both will start their studies at Oxford this fall.

”This is an opportunity that I never would have imagined when I first began at USF,“ said Allen.

Allen will pursue a master’s degree in clinical embryology while at Oxford. Her career goal is to become a reproductive endocrinologist.

Khalil will pursue a master’s degree in medical anthropology at Oxford and hopes to go on to earn her PhD in anthropology.

”This opportunity is especially invaluable to me because by supporting the master’s in medical anthropology, the Frost Scholarship values a field not generally recognized in STEM,“ said Khalil. ”That fact gives me hope that I can help further awareness of the crucial role that anthropology plays in advancing our knowledge of human health and disease.“

Advisors in USF’s Honors College and Office of National Scholarships work closely with students to inform them about this type of scholarship opportunity, encourage them to apply and pursue their research programs at Oxford.

”We are so pleased that Ricci and Maie will get to enjoy the wonderful opportunities provided by the Frost scholarships,“ said Dr. Charles Adams, Dean of the USF Honors College. ”I am impressed with the hard work and dedication of both of these excellent students, and I hope that their success will inspire current and future Bulls to apply for this and other highly competitive academic scholarships.“

The Frost program is supported by the generosity of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Philanthropic Foundation. Nine Frost scholars have been awarded this year. In the program’s three-year history, six USF students have earned Frost scholarships.

Students interested in more information about competitive academic scholarships are encouraged to contact the USF Office of National Scholarships which identifies, recruits, and mentors high achieving students to apply for national merit scholarships across all disciplines.

The University of South Florida is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. USF is a Top 25 research university among public institutions nationwide in total research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. Serving over 48,000 students, the USF System has an annual budget of $1.6 billion and an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion. USF is a member of the American Athletic Conference.
