Posted

Charles F. Harteg, of Bradenton, FL, entered into God’s Heavenly Kingdom on August 9, 2023, at the age of 96. Charles was born in Conshohocken, PA, the son of Charles A. and Eva (Dashnaw) Harteg. He and his twin sister, Anna, were less than three pounds at birth and were not expected to live; yet they both reached the age of 96. Charles grew up in the country during the depression doing farm chores, hunting, fishing and playing baseball. At age 17, he enlisted in the Navy. He served as a hospital corpsman in Alaska and Guam from 1945 to 1949 near the end of WWII. He was a member of the Greatest Generation and we never tired of hearing his great stories about his time in the Navy and growing up in rural PA.

After moving to Bradenton in 1966, he and his wife, Mary Ellen, raised their family here. Charles worked at Manatee Memorial Hospital in the laboratory for many years and specialized in Bacteriology. Charles volunteered as an umpire when the Little League was started in Bradenton in 1970. He continued to umpire and coach until his son, Paul, finished playing Senior Little League. Charles was a big fan of the Tampa Devil Rays, Tampa Bay Bucs and always flew the American flag at home flanked by the team flag depending upon the season.

Charles is survived by his brother, Blaine Harteg; his daughter, Karen Uba (Rich); daughter, Lisa Alexander; son, Paul Harteg (Angie) daughter, Robin O’Keefe; 6 grandchildren, Lisa, Haley, Chad, Meghan, Anabelle and Danny.

Thank you to Brookdale Palma Sola and Tidewell Hospice for the kindness and care provided. A Remembrance Service will be held at the Sarasota National VA Cemetery this fall.
