Future of Ag Panel Discussion

Posted

I attended a recent panel discussion, "The Future of Agriculture in Manatee County," held at Dakin Dairy. I have (mostly) great things to say. The panel moderator did a fantastic job. More important, though, were the panelists themselves.

They each had a special passion for keeping agriculture in Manatee County. They opened my eyes to the importance of keeping food production at home. They provided insight as to the “common good” that comes from agriculture. They made it clear that more county residents and elected officials need to become advocates for agriculture. Not to save them (the farmers, ranchers, etc.) but to save ourselves.

They inspired me to want to do my part … but this is where it fell a bit short.

I wish there had been more information about where we can buy local. I would have loved it if there were representatives from ALL of the area growers, ranchers, etc. with booths set up so we can see what is available in our area. Maybe this is a starting place for a future event. A celebration of all things Manatee. Hint. Hint.

I wish the panelists had not felt inclined to bring up being “good Christians,” especially in the same breath as saying very adamantly that tribal politics does not help agriculture while also saying “ag” needs more support from everyone in the county.

I wish the discussion could have addressed the conundrum of living in a very “red county” while simultaneously espousing the suggestion for farming subsidies.

It was nice to see Commissioner Kruse in attendance, as well as awesome District 1 candidates Jen Hamey and Carol Felts, but why, oh why, wasn’t Commissioner Satcher there?

Thanks to everyone who made this happen. I am hoping to see a Part 2. Let me know how to help.

This impressive session provided a peek into the issues of Florida agriculture versus development and growth. 1000 Friends of Florida has been providing insight and research into this important issue on an ongoing basis. Jim Strickland has been involved and a strong participant into these programs. Please look at this recent report. https://1000fof.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/FOF-1306-Ag-2040-2070-Report-v4-WEB.pdf Sign up for future programs and get informed. It affects all of us and the future of Florida, and needs to be non-partisan. Ruth Lawler
