Patrick Maroney

Posted

On Thursday, March 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving and devastated family, the frequent flyer, Patrick Joseph Maroney, passed on to his next adventure. As his children Daniel and Meghan put it, Dad was young-at-heart and always up for the next big adventure. That characteristic earned him the nickname ""Peter Pan"" from his children, and he embraced it enthusiastically.

Pat was born on March 24, 1952, in Syracuse, New York, and was reared by his parents, John and Julia Maroney, in Tipperary Hill. Everybody in the family wanted him to be delivered on Saint Paddy's Day, but he held out because he wanted a day of his own.

Pat loved everything Irish, which is not surprising, considering his father was one of the legendary Irish lads who threw rocks at the now green-on-top-of-red traffic light in Tipperary Hill to salute the Irish community.

The family home was only a block away from Burnett Park, where good weather brought pick-up basketball games that Pat frequently participated in. His love of sports helped cement a very strong bond with his father, but to his mom, he was her baby as the youngest of her brood. Pat was predeceased by both parents and his middle brother, Robert. His older brother, Jim, runs a horse breeding farm in Oswego.

Pat attended Saint Patrick's Academy through eighth grade, and then he transferred to Christian Brothers Academy, where he excelled as a captain of his basketball team. Pat was a born leader. According to his eldest brother Jim, their father was finally rewarded with a son who was actually on a winning team.

It was while Jim and Pat were attending SUNY Oswego together that Pat continued to demonstrate his remarkable leadership skills. He was unanimously chosen as the president of Sigma Tau Chi fraternity.

As fate would have it, Pat met the love of his life, Lois Nichols, in French class. He immediately knew she was ""the one."" They began their adventure together on June 8, 1974, when they got married two weeks after graduation and moved to Albany.

Pat and Lois shared many unique loves, with none being more important to them than their strong roots in family. Pat worked for his in-laws' family business, while Lois taught French and Russian at Shenandoah Valley High School. While in Albany, Lois gave birth to their two children, Daniel and Meghan.

In 1985, Lois started losing her hearing, and they sought out a specialist in Florida to help with her condition. After a fateful vacation to the West Coast of Florida (and a coinciding visit from Hurricane Elena), they were so impressed they decided to move the whole family down to St. Petersburg to begin their next adventure.

Pat then began, what ended up being his 37-year career, in wealth management. Throughout his stellar career, Pat served as a stockbroker, commodities trader, and branch/complex manager in Bradenton, Coral Gables, Tampa, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Venice, and St. Petersburg. His passion was always to make the lives better of those who worked for and with him. His last years were his proudest, co-founding Family Wealth Solutions, the boutique wealth management firm he started with his son, Daniel.

Loved by so many, Pat had that charismatic personality where if you met him once, you would remember him forever. He made you feel like you were the most important person in the room.

Pat is survived by his wife, Lois, his children, Daniel and Meghan (Clary), with their spouses, Sara and Matthew (Clary), and four grandchildren, Logan, Elyse, Chase, and Elle.

In honoring Pat, his funeral will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels (12905 SR 70-E, Lakewood Ranch FL 34202), with a Celebration of Life immediately following from 12:30 to 4 PM at McGrath's Irish Ale House (8110 Lakewood Main Street, Lakewood Ranch FL, 34202). Those who wish to remember Pat in a special way may make a donation in his memory to ALDA (Association of Late-Deafened Adults).
