Manatee Students Continue to Shine at National TSA Competition

BRADENTON – For the 11th year in a row, School District of Manatee County Technology Student Association (TSA) competitors captured more event trophies and "Top 10“ finishes than any other school district in the nation, during the 2017 National TSA Conference held last weekend at Rosen Shingle Creek, located in Orlando.

More than 8,000 of the top middle and high school TSA students from across the country attended the conference to compete in 70+ technology-based competitions.
 
More than 215 middle and high school students, along with their advisors from Manatee County – representing 12 Manatee County Schools – brought home 16 first place event trophies; 11 second place trophies; seven third place trophies; along with a grand total of 78 "Top 10“ event finishes.
 
Braden River High School students, led by advisors Gil Burlew, John Frank, and Kyle Holbrook captured another all-time trophy record of 20, including seven first place finishes in 3D Animation, Digital Video Production, Engineering Design, Fashion Design & Technology, Flight Endurance, Future Technology Teacher, and On Demand Video. Southeast High School students, led by teachers Richard Platt and Christy Clark secured 11 "Top 10“ event finishes including first place awards in Dragster Design and Essays on Technology. Lakewood Ranch High School students, guided by advisors Ben Long and Dan Shafer, took several top finishes including third place in both Coding and Transportation Modeling. Palmetto High School, led by Brian Kendzior, earned eighth place in Dragster Design and tenth place in Photographic Technology. TSA students from Bayshore High School along with teacher Pamela Platt, and Manatee High School students led by Jason Giacomel, also attended.
 
Haile Middle School, under the leadership of Maureen Hudson and Kelly Gavin earned 22 "Top 10“ event finishes including first place in Construction Challenge, Dragster, Inventions & Innovations, Medical Technology. Braden River Middle School students, led by advisors Angela Marshall and Kristen Cunningham earned nine "Top 10“ event finishes including first place in Forensic Technology, Mass Production, and Promotional Marketing. Nolan Middle School students, under the leadership of Justin Devine and Donna Sollars, brought home six "Top Ten“ finishes; Johnson Middle School students, along with advisors Hollis Bostic and Suzanne Jarrell, took seventh place in Mass Production and eighth place in Website Design. Students from Buffalo Creek Middle School, led by advisors Maddie Ross and Dana Townson, earned sixth place in Digital Photography. Sugg Middle School students, under the direction of Charles Routhier, also competed.
 
The School District of Manatee County is also honored that one of our students was elected to be a National TSA Officer. Braden River High School student, Yoshua "Yoshi“ Torralva, will serve as the National TSA Reporter for 2017-2018.
 
"The results from this national competition are just an example of the many, great things going on here in Manatee County,“ said Doug Wagner, Director of Adult, Career and Technical Education. "Congratulations to all of the students, teachers, and schools for representing our school district so well.“
