Parking Meters Go Live This Week in Downtown Sarasota

SARASOTA – Paid parking meters have returned to downtown Sarasota. The city decided to wait until after Independence Day weekend to put them in effect. Parking rates are $1.50 an hour with 10 minutes free after you enter your license plate info.

There will be both pay stations and pole-mount meters, along with the option of using the ParkMobile app to pay from a mobile device. There will still be There will also be hundreds of free parking spaces in the downtown area, along with the city garage.

The city previously added a meter system and paid garage on St. Armands Circle in February. A previous effort to use metered parking was scrapped when merchants claimed it was having a negative impact on downtown business.

The city has cited studies that show that having metered parking leads to more available spaces for shoppers and an increase in economic activity around them. Many merchants have remained resistant, claiming paid parking would depress shopping traffic.
