It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew J. Sargeant on November 16, 2024 in Bradington, Florida from heart failure. He was way too young, only 41 years of age at the time of his passing. He was born August 4th, 1983, in Providence, Rhode Island and lived in Warwick, Rhode Island until he moved to Coventry, Rhode Island at age three. He moved to Richmond, Rhode Island at age six and went on to live in too many places to list here.
He learned to cook early in life as he loved to eat and experiment in the kitchen. He went on to make a career of cooking and loved to be in a kitchen. He attended The Prout School in Wakefield, Rhode Island, graduating in 2001. He went on to obtain a BA degree in Biology from the University of Rhode Island.
To all that knew him, his unique sense of humor will be greatly missed as he possessed the ability to find humor in just about any situation, probably as a result of watching too much South Park and The Simpsons as a child. He was an avid reader, and at an early age he had just about every Dr. Seuss book memorized but still liked them to be read to him. He had every Calvin and Hobbes cartoon ever written memorized and even reenacted a few of them. All of this contrasted with his love of horror movies, particularly any and all Godzilla movies.
One of his happy places early in life was sitting at the Border Cafe in Harvard Square reading a book he had just bought at the Harvard Book Store. AJ was an avid sports fan. Growing up he played baseball, hockey, basketball, and volleyball. He played basketball and volleyball in high school and always wished that Prout had a football team. As an adult he continued to play basketball and volleyball. He was a diehard fan of both the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. We will all remember Sunday football and food with AJ.
AJ is survived by both of his parents: James Sargeant, Sr. of Warwick, RI and Ilona Labossiere of Richmond, RI. He is also survived by all three of his siblings: James Sargeant, Jr. of West Warwick, RI, Lisa Sargeant of Framingham, MA, Daniel Sargeant of Maynard, MA., and his longtime partner Melissa Bechler of Anna Maria, Florida. In addition, he is survived by one niece: Dakota Sargeant of Richmond, RI. From his oldest brother Jimmy, he acquired his love of animals and extensive knowledge related to them. From his sister Lisa he acquired his love of diverse foods through countless food tours of Boston. From his brother Dan he acquired his love of sports, both playing and watching, and the love of the outdoors.
He climbed many mountains and paddled many rivers in his younger years. Of all the lessons his siblings taught him it appears that he learned the most important ones related to being a good person and following his own path as AJ was known for taking the path less traveled as well as being a quality human being. A celebration of his life will be held once his ashes have returned home to Rhode Island, but due to the suddenness and unexpected nature of his passing, firm plans have not been made yet as the family deals with his sudden loss. Once plans are made, we will post them on Facebook and tag AJ. If you wish to contribute pictures to his memorial, please post them on Facebook and we will copy them from there or feel free to send them to any of his siblings.
