SARASOTA – Urbanite Theatre's regional premiere of Lucas Hnath's critically-acclaimed Isaac’s Eye will debut at their downtown Sarasota theater on August 14.
Isaac's Eye reimagines Isaac Newton’s famous feud with scientist Robert Hooke in a modern setting. It revolves around a real experiment by Newton during his career. Eager to discover whether or not light was made of particles, Newton believed inserting a needle into his tear duct and then bending the eyeball would allow him to better understand optics.

“The play offers the rare opportunity to blend comedy and fantasy with real historical breakthrough,” says Urbanite Co-Artistic Director Brendan Ragan. “Setting the play in timeless environment allows us to make choices based on both 17th and 21st century conventions. Some of the history and science mentioned is very real. But the comedy and language are distinctly modern. It’s hard to think of another play anywhere near this clever.”
Vincent Carlson-Brown will direct Urbanite's production, which runs through September 6. Carlson-Brown, a 16-year company member of Nebraska Shakespeare, joins Urbanite as guest director.
FSU/Asolo Rep vet Ben Williamson stars as Newton, while fellow FSU/Asolo alum Kimberly Stephenson plays Katherine. Robby May will star as Hooke.
