Arts and Entertainment Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Welcomes One, Promotes Another on the Professional Team

Joey James

SARASOTA — Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) has hired Joey James to serve as its company manager and assistant to the artistic director, and promoted Travis Ray to associate managing director. The moves on the professional team will help WBTT to manage increased demands created by higher attendance, elevated fundraising and media activity, and longer theater runs.

James will be working with founder and artistic director Nate Jacobs to support the travel, housing, and ground transportation for all guest artists, and will provide administrative assistance for Jacobs as needed. He will also serve as the liaison between guest artists and the WBTT staff.

Previously, James served as an acting apprentice and teaching artist, and education intern, for Florida Studio Theatre, and as the drama club instructor for the Felton Laboratory School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Claflin University.

Ray, who previously served as operations manager for WBTT, was promoted to associate managing director. In his new role, he will work closely with senior leadership to execute efforts in fundraising, communications, business operations and community outreach. Ray, who began his tenure with WBTT in 2014, has extensive acting and theatre education credits, including a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Management from the University of Alabama.
Travis Ray
Travis has shown himself to be an outstanding addition to our team of senior staff.

"Nate and I are pleased to recognize his contributions and capabilities with an expanded role,” said board chair and acting director Julie Leach. "As we have grown over the last several years through expanding our performances and increasing our generous donor support, we have worked hard to build our staff resources. For so many years, our long-time staff have each had to fulfill multiple roles, so everyone is thrilled when we can bring on additional team members."
