Staff Report
This year's ArtSlam is almost upon us, and will feature the work of several local artists, musicians, comedians and dancers, including numerous local students. The
Realize Bradenton-organized event, which happens at the Bradenton Farmers' Market on Saturday, March 5, is free and family-friendly.
Realize Bradenton's executive director, Johnette Isham, gave reasons for her organization's focus on student art and performances for this year's ArtSlam in a statement: "Arts education doesn't happen in a vacuum. We recognize the vital importance of community-school partnerships. This experience takes students and educators out of the classroom and puts them in a situation where they engage and inspire the public."
Hosting 22 different teams bringing a wide variety of art and performances, many of the event's teams will consist of Manatee School District students:
- Wakeland Elementary's exhibition that allows participants to make a fabric bracelet. Called "Woven Together," the exhibit is meant to call attention to the diverse "quilt" of the local community.
- "Machines Making Masterpieces" by Manatee School For the Arts, featuring "a large art making machine powered by MSA students," according to a press release. MSA students will perform dances inspired by the machine while creating art, and attendees will be able to create their own art using small, available art making machines.
- Visible Men Academy's 3-on-3 basketball tournament, "The Art of Basketball."
- A visual representation of musical rhythm by Haile Middle called "Realizing Rhythm."
- An interactive exhibit by Bayshore High consisting of large canvases that attendees will use to create a mural. The public will be asked to draw from images in Manatee County while painting.
- Environmental art projects for the public that will be guided by Lakewood Ranch High students, whose artwork will be available for purchase through donations.
- Children will get free face and arm painting by Southeast High students, who will make three full-body master paintings during their exhibit.
- A superhero-themed exhibit from Palmetto High students, where the public can get their faces painted to look like a superhero and get their picture taken in front of a comic book-style backdrop.
