Barbara Jean Cordwell, a cherished soul known for her spirited heart and unwavering kindness, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on May 9, 1938, in Morgantown, WV, Barbara's life was a testament to love, family, and community. She departed this world in Bradenton, FL, surrounded by the warmth of her family, leaving behind a legacy of joy and service.
Barbara's early years in Morgantown were filled with the promise that she would grow to touch the lives of many. She attended University High School, where she laid the foundations of her lifelong love for learning and community service. Barbara's commitment to her faith and community was evident through her tireless work as the Director of the First United Methodist Church Food Pantry and PPR Committee Member at FUMC Palmetto. Her dedication to helping others was a beacon of light that inspired all who knew her.
Professionally, Barbara was a woman of diverse talents and interests. She made a lasting impression as the owner of BJ's Ball Cards, where her passion for collectibles and sports memorabilia brought joy to enthusiasts and collectors alike. Her career also included a significant period as the Head Cashier at Upper Heyford Airforce Base in England, where she was known for her efficiency and warm smile.
Barbara's zest for life was not confined to her professional and charitable endeavors; she was an avid golfer, bowler, and softball player. Her competitive spirit and athleticism were legendary among her friends and family. Beyond the sports fields, Barbara found solace and creativity in woodworking, painting alongside her sister Brenda, and immersing herself in the strategic intricacies of card games. She was also a fan of reality TV, which provided her with moments of relaxation and entertainment.
Barbara's faith played a central role in her life. She served her church in many capacities, including Head of Communion and Greeters, Prayer Chain, and as a member of the Ice Bible Fellowship Group. Her commitment to her faith community was a source of strength and inspiration to many, and her service was a reflection of her deep love for God and people.
Family was the cornerstone of Barbara's life. She was a devoted wife to her husband, James H. Cordwell, and a loving mother to her daughters, Susan Hudson (Kevin) and Lori Stearns (Todd). She was preceded in death by her son, James R. Cordwell (Shelly).
Barbara's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Lindsay Farmer, Ryan Hudson, Rachel Sprunger, Emily Rothgeb, Caila Cordwell, and Josh Cordwell, as well as her eleven great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Taliah, Gracelyn, James, Kain, Kingston, Brae, Ava, Harper, Hunter, and Henry, who brought her immeasurable joy and pride.
Barbara was not just a beloved family member but also a great friend and neighbor. Her ability to forge deep and lasting relationships was one of her most remarkable qualities. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering support to all who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
