SARASOTA – Traffic congestion on barrier islands in Sarasota and Manatee counties is ready to come up again as a subject for discussion among officials this week. On Monday, the
Manatee-Sarasota Metropolitan Planning Organization is set to reconsider whether to request a study from the Florida Department of Transportation on how to alleviate traffic conditions on the islands.
The study, which is estimated to cost $675,000, would give analysis on how counties with barrier islands outside the Manasota region handle traffic congestion on those islands.
The main goal of the study is to provide the area with a master plan "to improve overall traffic operations and circulation to, from and on the barrier islands, to include consideration of recommendations related to public transit, other alternate mobility options and land use issues as appropriate," according to the meeting's agenda.
The meeting will be the second time that signing off on the study will come under consideration by the MPO, who first heard details of the proposed study
in October, when members decided that the amount that would be spent on conducting the study would be better spent elsewhere.
The 9 a.m. meeting will take place at the Holiday Inn at SRQ Airport, located at 8009 15th Street East in Sarasota.
