BOCC Work Session Preview for January 5, 2016

Posted
BRADENTON – At Tuesday's afternoon work session, proposed changes to land development regulations will be presented to Manatee County Commissioners. The amendments are focused on changing how a county road is designed depending on several different factors.

Created by Littlejohn Planning Consultants, the amendments would comprise a new addition to the county Highway & Traffic Standards Manual called Complete Streets, which is defined as streets "designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and bus riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street."

The county notes that the manual currently only allows for two roadway cross sections, and wants more flexibility when designing new streets or making improvements to current ones.

The consulting firm will also present proposals for changes to the county's Public Works Engineering Standards Manuals.

In other business at the work session, commissioners will:
  • Hear recommendations to remove development barriers in the Southwest area's Urban Core, including Manatee Avenue West, Cortez Road West, S.R. 70, and U.S. 41. According to the count, the goals of providing the recommendations are for "quality infill and redevelopment; efficient infrastructure; predictability; economic development; protection of established neighborhoods; and government efficiency."
  • Receive a presentation on the condition of the county's paved roads, and funding for future repairs.
  • Review current and newly proposed speed limits for Rye Road, and discuss Gene Witt Elementary's school zone.
The work session begins at 9 a.m., on the fourth floor of the County Administrative Center at 1112 Manatee Avenue West, in the Manatee Room.
