Candidate Profile: Kathleen Grant (Manatee County Commission, District 5)

Posted
Kathleen Grant says she believes what goes on in our local government is more significant to our daily life than what happens in the national political arena. She says her opponent, current county commissioner Vanessa Baugh, isn't doing the job and operates under a double standard.

Grant lives in Lakewood Ranch, has served 7 years as treasurer for the Lakewood Ranch CDD2 Board of Supervisors and 3 years as treasurer for the Watercress Condominium Board of Directors.

Having graduated with a MBA in Finance from New York University, Grant spent 25 years in finance working with J.P. Morgan, Hill & Knowlton and Met Life to name a few.

Grant claims her integrity is not for sale and if elected will make decisions solely based on what's best for the community.

A former attorney, Grant has lived in Manatee County since 2004. She says her Lakewood neighbors don't have a voice that speaks for them, but one that speaks to them, when it comes to local issues.

On county governance, she said, "The results of years of poor decision-making speak for themselves – a bloated budget and a stressed infrastructure, and no plans to correct these, except asking citizens for more dollars." Grant added: "The process that brought us here has to change, and that can only happen if the decision makers change. There is no reason to expect that the people who created the problems can provide the solutions."

Grant says she has the experience, skills and intelligence needed to bring a fresh, innovative voice to the Manatee County Commission.

Grant and Baugh are both running under the Republican ticket. There are no other candidates for District 5, so the decision on who will be the next commissioner for the district will be decided in the August 30 primary elections. It will be an election open to all registered voters.
