BRADENTON – A naturally occurring land shift has required the relocation of several buoys in Boca Grande Pass. The FWC is seeking input about red drum bag limits. Have you caught an impressive lionfish recently? Find out how you can set a state record.

  • Sands shift and when they do, sometimes, buoys must be moved and boundaries changed. That’s what happened recently in Boca Grande Pass. Recent changes to the buoys marking Boca Grande Pass will affect tarpon anglers and others fishing in the Pass during the months of April, May and June.
  • A new red drum stock assessment is complete and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking input from anglers about their experiences with the red drum fishery. We want to know how you think the fishery is doing and what you think of the current bag limits.
  • Visit MyFWC.com/RedDrum2016 to learn more about red drum and take a short survey.
  • It’s big, it’s bold and it’s invasive. But could your lionfish catch be a record?
  • If it is over 477 millimeters (18.78 inches) it very well could be.
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) newest way of encouraging divers to target these spiny invaders is the lionfish state records program.
  • Lionfish are an invasive species that could have a negative impact on native fish and wildlife.
  • Think you can’t possibly get one larger than 18.78 inches? Don’t worry. You can qualify by both length (must be in millimeters) and weight (grams) for largest and smallest lionfish. We also have divisions for junior and hook and line.
  • Record holders will be recognized on MyFWC.com and may receive prizes as well.
  • Enter your record fish today by visiting MyFWC.com/Lionfish and clicking on ”State Records Program.“

Capt. Rick Grassett’s Weekly Fishing Report

Anna Maria Island and Sarasota winter residents, Bill Morrison and Gary Marple, fished the ICW near Venice with me on Monday evening. They had good action catching and releasing snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow flies. Alan Sugar, from Mich., fished Sarasota Bay with me on Tuesday afternoon. He had some action catching and releasing trout and Spanish mackerel on Ultra Hair Clouser flies fishing deep grass flats on the west side of the bay.

Mathew Gray, his dad Bob Gray and uncle, John Gray, all from Ontario, Canada, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday. We fished deep grass flats on the east side of the bay and they had great action catching trout, Spanish mackerel and a cobia on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos. Tony Merlis, from N.H. and his daughter Jen, from Minn., fly fished the same areas with me on Thursday and caught and released trout, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies.

Trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and more on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay and night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures should be good options. Look for reds, snook and big trout mixed with mullet schools or cruising shallow flats and edges of bars in Sarasota Bay and backcountry areas of Charlotte Harbor and lower Tampa Bay. Tripletail should also be a good option in the coastal gulf when conditions are good.
