BRADENTON – Stone crab season closed May 16. The FWC is reminding beachgoers that sea turtle nesting season began May 1. Recreational red snapper season is open every weekend through May. Weather should be mild for the upcoming holiday weekend.

  • The commercial and recreational harvest of stone crab claws in Florida closes on May 16, with the last day of harvest on May 15. Stone crab season will reopen on Oct. 15. This five-month closure occurs each year during the peak spawning season to help conserve and sustain Florida’s valuable stone crab resource.
  • Commercially harvested stone crab claws may be possessed and sold during the closed season but only if they have been placed in inventory prior to May 16 by a licensed wholesale or retail dealer.
  • Stone crab traps must be removed from the water within five days after the close of the stone crab season unless a special extension is granted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and stone crab claws cannot be harvested from traps pulled after the season closes.
  • The 2016 recreational red snapper season in Gulf of Mexico state waters opens Saturdays and Sundays in May starting May 7. On May 28, the season will open continuously through July 10. The season will also reopen for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, and on Labor Day. This would provide for a 78-day season in Gulf state waters.
  • This season will help maintain fishing opportunities for recreational anglers in state waters and provide additional May and fall weekend fishing days.
  • The private recreational angler red snapper season in Gulf federal waters will run June 1-9 (closing June 10). The federally-permitted charter boat and headboat season for federal waters will run June 1-July 16 (closing July 17).

  • Sea turtle nesting season begins in May on many Florida beaches, including the sandy beaches of northwest Florida. The season lasts through the end of October and is the critical time when people can help keep sea turtles and hatchlings safe
Capt. Rick Grassett’s Weekly Fishing Report

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had decent action in the coastal gulf in Sarasota jumping 4 tarpon and catching and releasing two during the past week. As expected, tarpon numbers increased and large schools became more plentiful as water temperatures rose to 80 degrees by the end of the week.
Cliff Ondercin, of Sarasota, and his dad, Dennis Ondercin of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, tarpon-fished with me every day last week. They are experienced tarpon anglers that can cast accurately with tarpon tackle and know how to fight fish, which contributed to their success. We fished live crabs, a variety of baitfish, DOA Baitbusters and 4-inch CAL Shads, however all of their action was on a live crab. They had shots at tarpon every day, jumping 4 and catching and releasing two. The largest fish taped out an estimated 115-pounds.

Cliff and Dennis are longtime customers and friends and the tradition grew as the third generation, Cliff’s young son Mason joined us on Friday for his first exposure to tarpon fishing. In addition to spotting tarpon, he also saw huge spotted eagle rays, dolphins, manatees and sharks. His patience and attention on the boat was great!

Tarpon fishing in the coastal gulf should be good, depending on conditions, as we head towards a full moon next weekend. Snook season is closed now on the west coast of Florida, but catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW or in the surf with flies and DOA Lures should also be good. Look for reds, snook and big trout mixed with mullet schools or cruising shallow flats and edges of bars in backcountry areas of Charlotte Harbor and lower Tampa Bay. Trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay.
