BRADENTON – Happy Memorial Day! The Fire Charity Fishing Tournament and Kids Fishing Tournament, takes place June 10-12. The FWC is reminding beachgoers to watch out for nesting seabirds and sea turtles.

  • The recreational harvest of greater amberjack and gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico state waters (shore to 9 nautical miles) closes June 1 and will remain closed through July 31, reopening Aug. 1.
  • In federal Gulf waters, greater amberjack and gray triggerfish will also be closed June 1 through July 31.
  • Seasonal harvest closures help conserve Florida’s valuable greater amberjack and gray triggerfish populations and improve these fisheries for the future
  • Gag grouper will open for recreational harvest in most state and all federal Gulf of Mexico waters June 1. The black grouper and gag minimum size limit will increase from 22-inches to 24-inches total length in Gulf state waters starting June 1, to match recent changes in Gulf federal waters.
  • The gag grouper recreational season will be June 1 through Dec. 31 in all Gulf state waters excluding Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor and Jefferson counties (which have their own season from April 1-June 30) and excluding Monroe County (Monroe County follows the Atlantic state season).
  • Gulf state waters are from shore to 9 nautical miles. Federal waters begin where state waters end and extend to 200 nautical miles.
Capt. Rick Grassett’s Weekly Fishing Report

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action catching and releasing trout and bluefish on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos during the past week.
My brother, Joey Grassett and Chris Johnson, both from Seaford, Del. fished several days in Sarasota Bay with me. We fished deep grass flats and they had good action catching trout and bluefish on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos.

Trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and more on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay and night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures should be good options. Look for reds, snook and big trout mixed with mullet schools or cruising shallow flats and edges of bars in Sarasota Bay and backcountry areas of Charlotte Harbor and lower Tampa Bay. Tripletail should also be a good option in the coastal gulf when conditions are good.
