Fishing Updates

Commission to meet Nov. 16-17 in Key Largo

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will meet Nov. 16-17 in Key Largo to discuss a wide range of fish-and-wildlife issues, from shark harvesting, to opportunities and access for sportsmen, to gopher tortoise and other species management, and anchoring and mooring.
  • Sessions start at 8:30 a.m. both days at the Key Largo Grande Resort and Beach Club, 97000 South Overseas Highway, Key Largo. The meetings are open to the public.
  • On Wednesday, Nov. 16, after stakeholders recognize FWC employees for their special conservation efforts, staff will update the Commission on the recent Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and South Atlantic Fishery Management Council meetings held in October and September, respectively.
  • Commissioners are expected to take final action on several Division of Marine Fisheries Management issues, including adoption of federal Gulf of Mexico grouper standards to achieve consistency between the FWC's reef fish rule and proposed federal regulations in the Gulf.

Weekly Fishing Report by Capt. Rick Grassett

Nick Reding, from Sarasota, Fla., caught and released this sheepshead on a crab fly pattern while wading Sarasota Bay with Capt. Rick Grassett.

Dean Hannemann, from Sarasota, Fla., fished the coastal gulf with me on Monday. There were plenty of Spanish mackerel, but we only saw a couple of schools of albies and they were up and down very briefly. He caught and released several mackerel on Ultra Hair Clouser flies.            Action slowed in shallow water as we approached a full moon this week. Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, Spanish mackerel, pompano and sheepshead on flies during the past week.

Nick Reding, from Sarasota, fished a couple of days with me in Sarasota Bay. We waded and fly fished several bars and flats on both sides of the bay. He caught and released trout, a pompano and a sheepshead on my Grassett Flats Minnow and crab fly patterns. We sight fished reds on a bar one afternoon, had several eats and Nick connected with one on my Flats Minnow fly.

Next week’s negative low tides in the morning should concentrate reds and trout in potholes. Action with Spanish mackerel and albies in the coastal gulf should be good once the gulf settles down.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Rick Grassett
