Catherine Dwyer was born in Barre, Vermont on August 30, 1932, to Libera (Fracassi) and Thomas Dwyer. She was the fourth of eight children and one of only two girls. She maintained close relationships with her sister and brothers and their families throughout her lifetime. Her beloved siblings pre-deceased her.
Catherine grew up in Barre and attended public schools there, graduating from Spaulding High School in 1950. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont and shortly thereafter relocated to New York City, a major step for a young woman, without financial resources, who grew up in a small town in Vermont.
She received a Master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University and worked for many years for The New York Foundling, a venerable social services agency that serves challenged and troubled families and children throughout the New York City metro area. After relocating to Florida, along with other friends from New York, she continued her distinguished professional career serving the mental health needs of the children of Pinellas County. Her professional contributions were recognized by the National Association of Social Workers when she was named Social Worker of the Year for the Tampa Bay area. In semi-retirement she turned her attention to the other end of the age spectrum, serving the elderly in Manatee County by providing social work services to the clientele of a home health agency. Her professional work improved the lives of many people over the years, often when they were at their most vulnerable.
In addition to her family, Catherine maintained close relationships with many friends over the years. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a genuine and abiding interest in all that touched her loved ones. She was also courageous in facing many physical challenges in her lifetime and rarely complained even when coping with significant chronic pain.
Catherine is survived by many nieces and nephews, three sisters-in law and a cousin, Joan Sorrentino, who was like a sister to her. She survived her very dear friend and companion of many years, Jean Voorhees, whose son John was Catherine's principal supporter and caretaker during her final years and stalwart friend to her close family members. Her family wishes particularly to acknowledge John's love and care for her as well as the wonderful support of their aunt by his sister Deborah as well. Catherine also made new and important friends during her time at Westminster Manor and the family is grateful for their enriching contribution to her final years.
