Karin Grablin Joins Pines Of Sarasota Foundation Board
Karin Grablin, CPA, CFP¨ was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of The Pines of Sarasota Foundation, the community-based organization organized for the sole purpose to ensure that The Pines of Sarasota will continue to provide exceptional assisted living, skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s dementia care, regardless of a resident’s financial resources. The Foundation focuses on raising funds and delivering grants to support new construction, renovations, medical equipment, programs and projects to meet the needs of residents.
Located in Sarasota, the Pines provides assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care services to over 276 residents, in addition to operating a comprehensive rehabilitation center, education institute, thrift shop and two childcare facilities for staff and the neighboring community. Karin’s duties on the Board will include introducing potential donors to the organization, recruiting new Board members, and helping to raise awareness of The Pines in the community.

2012 FLORIDA ARBOR DAY
Florida Arbor Day is just around the corner. Everyone grab a shovel and get ready to plant a tree. Citizens are invited to tree plantings planned for Florida Arbor Day on Friday, January 20 described below to recognize the value of trees and improve the image of Manatee County’s urban forest. Trees have always played a crucial role in the long-term health, beauty and vitality of any thriving community by providing the following benefits:
10:00 a.m. The City of Holmes Beach Parks and Beautification Committee and Keep Manatee Beautiful will be planting a black olive tree at the City Campus near Comfort Station #2 at 5801 Marina Drive. Holmes Beach has been a Tree City USA since 2011.
11:00 a.m. The City of Anna Maria Environmental Enhancement and Education Committee will be planting three Spanish stoppers donated by Keep Manatee Beautiful in partnership with Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department at Bayfront Park on Bay Boulevard on the south side of the public restrooms. Anna Maria has been a Tree City USA since 2010.
12:00 p.m. The City of Bradenton Beach Scenic WAVES will be celebrating on Bridge Street recognizing it becoming a Tree City USA this year and where native street trees donated by Keep Manatee Beautiful will be planted to add canopy to Bridge Street.
1:00 p.m. The City of Palmetto will celebrate Florida Arbor Day this year with the planting of a Live Oak Tree at Hidden Lake Park (1720 12th St W), coordinated by Keep Manatee Beautiful. If you are interested in participating or are looking for other opportunities to volunteer with beautification projects, please contact the City of Palmetto Parks and Recreation Department by calling 941-723-4580. Palmetto has been a Tree City USA since 2011.
Officials and groups that will be part of these Arbor Day celebrations include: city mayors and commission/council members, county commissioners, Anna Maria Environmental Enhancement and Education Committee members, Bradenton Beach Scenic WAVES members, Florida Forest Service staff, Holmes Beach Parks and Beautification Board members, Keep Manatee Beautiful board members and technical advisors, Parks and Recreation Department staff, and Public Works Department staff.
2012-2013 VPK Open Enrollment
The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County will begin accepting applications for the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten 2012-2013 program starting February 6, 2012.
Children who are four (4) years old on or before September 1, 2012 are eligible for VPK beginning in August 2012. The VPK program is not limited in the number of children served and any qualified family can receive a Certificate of Eligibility at any time during the 2012-2013 program year.
To register for VPK in Manatee County, please visit the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County during normal business hours starting February 6, 2012 to complete an interview and receive a Certificate of Eligibility.

USF Sarasota-Manatee to offer financial aid information sessions at local high schools
The Financial Aid office at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) is partnering with the Sarasota County school district to offer informational sessions regarding financial aid for students and parents at local high schools. ”The workshops will cover such topics as federal and state financial aid programs; tips for filling out financial aid forms and the FAFSA application; and state and local scholarship opportunities, including the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program,“ said Gabriela Vega, Assistant Director of Financial Aid at USFSM.

Manatee County Spring Adult 5-on-5 Flag Football League
The Manatee County Government Parks and Recreation Department announces the formation of the Spring Adult 5-on-5 Flag Football League. Games will be played at G.T. Bray and Lakewood Ranch Park on Wednesday evenings. Season will begin on February 22, 2012 and run through April. Teams will play eight season games and participate in a single elimination playoffs tournament at the end of the season.
Teams are required to provide jerseys, triple threat flag belts and a football. Team Entry Fee of $325 and Official Team Roster are due upon registering. Team rosters may include up to ten players. Registration will be held from February 6 – 12, 2012 at the G.T. Bray Park Recreation Center located at 5502 33rd Avenue Drive West, Bradenton, FL 34209.
