A New Look For a Historical Community

Fair Lane Acres gets a new sign

Fair Lane Acres New Sign

Historical Fair Lane Acres, a 55 and older community in Bradenton Florida, has replaced its old sign with a new, modernized monument sign at one of their main entrances on US 41 and 49th Avenue Drive West. The sign was approved by the Fair Lane Acres Board of Directors for the purpose of improving the community, improving the visibility from US 41 and the overall aesthetics of the entrance. The sign was installed on April 16, 2012 and was a community effort as many groups donated the funds to have the new sign erected.

Board of Directors President, Carol Rankin, said, ”The sign is beautiful!“ The Board of Directors worked very closely with our community manager and with Manatee County officials to get the job done and done right! A special thanks to Charles and Manatee County! Director, Edward Kerly, went on to say ”This shows exactly what Fair Lane Acres is all about, which is quality and community. We have a quality community and the people in the community stepped up to make this new sign happen. It says a lot about Fair Lane Acres and the people who live here and I see that as very positive.“

Young Filmmakers will Address the Sometimes Difficult Transition Between Elementary and Middle School.

To Blend or Not To Blend

Students enrolled in this summer's Inspired Minds Film Kids Program, will explore the challenge of staying authentic and true to one's self. Through creating a short film, Film Kids participants will offer an insider's perspective on this issue. "We believe that kids learn most from other kids and that film is an incredible way to give our young people a voice, a healthy outlet for expressing their thoughts, feelings, & opinions," states Heather Manley, Director of the Film Kids' Program.

Last summer, Inspired Minds' first film, "The Good Kids", tackled the issue of bullying. "The Good Kids" was honored at the Sarasota Film Festival's Young Filmmakers' Showcase, and was an official selection of the Gasparilla International Film Festival. Manley said she hopes to share "The Good Kids" and future short films with local schools. "We are about kids changing the world, one film at a time."

Inspired Minds is now interviewing students for its 2012 summer program that will be held 7/9-7/19 at Braden River Elementary. The program is open to students in 3rd grade through 9th grade.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation Wins National Award For Excellence In Communications

The Council on Foundations today presented Gulf Coast Community Foundation with a Silver Award in the 2012 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards for Excellence in Communications. Gulf Coast received the honor for its 2012 Agenda for Action in the category of Annual or Biennial Reports. Gulf Coast President and CEO Teri A Hansen accepted the award at the Council’s annual conference in Los Angeles.

The Wilmer Shields Rich Award for Excellence in Communications is named after the woman who served as executive director of the National Council on Community Foundations (now the Council on Foundations) from 1957 to 1968. During her tenure, Rich championed public accountability by charitable foundations, urging them to effectively communicate their stewardship via publications and other forums.  The program allows the Council to showcase the ways foundations and corporate giving programs effectively communicate achievements in order to advance their grantmaking goals. A total of 140 entries were submitted for consideration in four categories this year, and 12 winners were selected.

”The Wilmer Shields Rich Awards program recognizes those who have excelled in the field of philanthropy, as well as continually defining new, innovative ways for grantmakers to communicate with the public and express creativity,“ said Evelyn Gibson, the Council’s director of awards programs. ”Congratulations to Gulf Coast Community Foundation on receiving this honor for being a leader in the philanthropic sector.“
