Palm Aire Tennis Association Socks It To Community Coalition on Homelessness

Members of the Palm Aire Tennis Association collected socks and shoes for the homeless in Manatee County during a luncheon held at Palm Aire Country Club.

Attendees enjoyed a lunch, followed by music from The Open Door Band, an outreach of the Community Coalition on Homelessness.  Made up of veterans, homeless or formerly homeless musicians, proceeds from the performance benefit Community Coalition on Homelessness. All of the current members of the Open Door Band have at one time been homeless.

”We are grateful that the community has embraced the band and all that they stand for,“ stated Adell Erozer, Executive Director of the Community Coalition on Homelessness. ”The sock drive is especially appreciated as there is a constant need for socks for our clients of all ages.“

A bin for ongoing sock and shoe donations will be placed in the Tennis Pro Shop at Palm Aire Country Club.

Manatee Employers Needed for Youth Virtual Job Fair

Employers in Manatee and Sarasota Counties now have the opportunity to tap into a talent pool of younger workers, ages 14-24, for a Virtual Job Fair running from May 13, 2012 to May 19, 2012.

WorkNet Pinellas workforce board has organized this event with other partners that span a six-county radius including the Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance (Hillsborough), Career Central (Pasco/Hernando), Suncoast Workforce (Sarasota/Manatee), Junior Achievement of West Central Florida, the Pinellas Education Foundation, and Tampa Bay area public school districts and colleges.

”By hiring younger workers, businesses can benefit from fresh perspectives and new ideas,“ said Mary Helen Kress, president and CEO of Suncoast Workforce. ”Younger workers also tend to be open to learning and thrive on coaching and mentoring from others - their ability to embrace change, diversity, and technology can result in cost savings for businesses,“ said Kress.

With listings ranging from first-time jobs to jobs requiring college degrees and some experience, the online platform offers very real jobs for very real job seekers.  In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the unemployment level for teenagers, 16-19 years, to be 24.5 percent – among the highest of all major worker groups (March 2012, not seasonally adjusted).

The Virtual Job Fair is free of cost and simple to access.  Businesses that are interested in participating are encouraged to post their open positions including summer internships, part-time or full-time opportunities on vjf.worknetpinellas.org. Only during the LIVE week-long event will job seekers be able to submit their resumes for employers’ job openings, who then can review them at their convenience.
