Publix Super Markets Charities Presents Check To United Way

Despite the extremely challenging economic conditions, Publix Super Markets continues to make an impact in Manatee County. With 14 stores, Publix is United Way’s largest contributing company in Manatee County. Publix and its employees pledged a total amount of $689,815 for the 2011-2012 Annual Campaign.

On March 27, Publix Super Markets Charities presented a check to the United Way of Manatee County for $294,700.  This check represents the company’s corporate match.

Please join United Way of Manatee County in recognizing Publix for their accomplishments.  Their generous support of the community and never-ending philanthropic efforts continue to a make tremendous difference, helping those who need it most.

Local ASID Designers partner with Habitat For Humanity

The Florida West Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers recently donated proceeds of $3738.91from their Designer Digs event to Habitat For Humanity.  This is the largest sum raised by FWC ASID for Habitat in the three year history of this event, where $2,000 was contributed in 2011.  In addition, ASID designers have donated many pro bono hours designing & renovating the new Habitat ReStore on Bee Ridge Road; have engaged local vendors and manufacturers to donate products for the retail store (including an entire showroom of new carpet); have helped with staging both stores in Sarasota to boost retail sales; have worked directly with new Habitat home owners creating interiors for their homes; and have conducted classes to help new home owners design their dwellings.

Designer Digs is a two-day event produced by the Florida West Coast Chapter of ASID, where members put their own homes on a public tour to showcase their talents and individual styles.  Student members from Ringling College of Art & Design participate by volunteering to be docents at each home.  The event will kick off season in October again this year.


Environmental Educator Mixes Magic with Lesson on Groundwater to Manatee County Elementary Students

On April 2 and 3, students from Kinnan Elementary and Abel Elementary were captivated by renowned environmental educator Lynn Hodges as he utilized a bit of magic in his scientific demonstration ”Where’s the Water?“  The interactive show, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, taught the students the fundamental principles and value of ground water.

Hodges used magic tricks such as making multiple balls appear to symbolize water molecules duplicating, and levitating a cup while pouring water into it. His presentation entertained the students’ while enlightening them on where water comes from and how to protect it from pollution. Hodges also used visual demonstrations to explain how scientists filter different types of pollution in order to make healthy, clean drinking water available.

”It’s important for kids to get education at a young age about water being a vital and limited resource,“ said Hodges, who developed this program specifically for Lockheed Martin Corporation.  He also presents ”Where’s The Water?“ near Lockheed Martin’s other environmental restoration sites in California and Maryland.  For more information, contact Gary Cambre, Lockheed Martin Corporation Communications Manager at gary.cambre@lmco.com or (941) 228-3135.


Braden River High Senior Named National Achievement Scholarship Winner

Timothy L. Parker II, a senior at Braden River High School in Bradenton, was been named the recipient of a National Achievement Scholarship today by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Timothy is one of approximately 800 outstanding Black American high school seniors who have won Achievement Scholarship awards this year through the National Achievement Scholarship Program. These awards, totaling over $2 million dollars, are financed by grants from 29 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented Black American youth and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition. By the conclusion of the 2012 program, marking the 48th annual competition, about 31,800 participants will have received scholarships for undergraduate study worth more than $100 million.


Florida Governor Rick Scott Meets with Business and Community Leaders at Chamber’s Business Round Table

Florida Governor Rick Scott met with local business and community leaders this morning at The Greater Chamber of Commerce to discuss ways to help employers improve our state’s economy and to create more jobs.  The business round table discussion included leaders of the Sarasota Tomorrow initiative and began with remarks from Governor Scott about the ”Jobs Bill“ just passed in the State Legislature.

The focus of the session was an open discussion with employers about issues and concerns facing our businesses.  Area employers participating in the meeting represented industries including manufacturing, banking and finance, technology, real estate and professional and business services.

Local Chamber President Steve Queior noted, ”our county lost tens of thousands of jobs, as did Manatee, over the last 5 years. As we start to get those Floridians back to work, it is great to speak directly with Governor Scott about strengthening our economy. As what could be called the state’s ”CEO“, his support for our current and new businesses are critical and much appreciated.“ 

Governor Rick Scott emphasized that his job was all about ”quality education for our kids, the opportunity to get a job and not increasing the cost of living for Floridians“. Issues discussed ranged from workforce training and insurance to international business and the diversification of the area’s economy.


SBEP Presents Blue Dolphin Awards To Local Champions Of Sarasota Bay


The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) hosted the first ever Sarasota Bay Awards Program Wednesday, April 4 at Powel Crosley Mansion. More than 140 guests attended including community leaders and representatives with many organizations involved with restoring and protecting Sarasota Bay.

Blue Dolphin Awards were presented to the following individuals and groups: Charles Edwards, a long term volunteer member of the SBEP Citizens Advisory Committee, Jack Merriam, the recently retired environmental manager with Sarasota County, Martha B. King Middle School in Bradenton, a major supporter of the Bay Guardians volunteer program managed by SBEP in partnership with Around the Bend Nature Tours, Raindrops Cisterns, a Sarasota business focused on rainwater harvesting and water storage solutions, and Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring, a non-profit group that has protected sea turtles, shorebirds and their habitat for more than three decades

Local commissioners that serve on the SBEP Policy Board presented the awards. They included Sarasota Commissioner Jon Thaxton, Manatee Commissioner Michael Gallen, City of Bradenton Commissioner Marianne Barnebey, and Town of Longboat Key Commissioner Lynn Larson. Mark
Alderson, the Director of SBEP also presented an award. Sara Kane with SBEP welcomed the guests and Randy Moore, the owner of Triple 3 Marketing, served as the master of ceremonies.

The event sponsors included Stantec, Reef Innovations, Inc. Scheda Ecological Associates, Janicki Environmental, Inc. and Triple 3 Marketing, LLC.


2012 Summer Adult Co-Ed Kickball

Bradenton, FL (April 5, 2012)-The Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department announces the formation of the 2012 Summer Adult Co-Ed Kickball League.  League play will begin on Friday nights starting May 18 with 2 leagues at G.T. Bray Park and Lakewood Ranch Park.  A single elimination playoff will follow an eight game regular season.  The team registration fee is $400.00, which includes Team Shirts for a roster of up to 20 players.

An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m.  The meeting will be held at the G.T.
