Manatee County Government offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 20 to commemorate Presidents Day.
Trash, recycling and yard waste collections for the week will be postponed one day from Tuesday through Saturday for residents in unincorporated Manatee.
Manatee County Area Transit and the Anna Maria Island Trolley will operate normal daily routes.
Manatee County parks and beaches will be open to the public. Manatee County and Buffalo Creek Golf Courses will be open. The Fitness Center and Teen Room at G.T. Bray Recreation Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Racquet Center Clay Courts will be open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The hard surface tennis/racquetball courts will be open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. G.T. Bray’s gymnasium will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Youth Camps will be open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Aquatics Center will be open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Manatee County parks and beaches will be open to the public. Manatee County and Buffalo Creek Golf Courses will be open. Blackstone Skate Park will be open. G.T. Bray Recreation Center will be closed. G.T. Bray Skate Park is currently closed for repairs.
Central Library, the only county library normally open on Mondays, will be closed for Presidents Day and will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, Feb. 22. All of Manatee County's branch libraries operate Tuesday through Saturday and are therefore not affected by the Monday closure.
Manatee County’s publicly owned natural preserves will remain open.

Salt & Light Productions, a project of the Center for Faith and Freedom, announced today that it has awarded a cost-sharing grant to the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund. The Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund provides opportunities for socio-economically diverse students to experience an independent college preparatory education at The Out-of-Door Academy's Upper School. The fund was created after the untimely and tragic death of Taylor Emmons, an accomplished student and baseball player at The Out-of-Door Academy.
Stuart J. Roth, Founder and President of CFF commented, "We are pleased to be able to offer non-profit organizations like the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund the opportunity to work with us in producing a high-end media presentation. I understand that we are in challenging economic times and we know from many years of experience that a video presentation is an indispensable tool for marketing and development efforts."
The Center for Faith and Freedom (CFF), a non-profit organization that has been serving communities across the nation since 1989 with its multi-media and production capabilities is currently accepting grant applications for its 2012 projects. Through its selection process CFF will offer a limited number of non-profit organizations a cost-sharing grant that will subsidize a percentage of the production costs associated with its video presentation. The Center's internationally acclaimed and award-winning production affiliate Salt & Light Productions has been the recipient of 2 Emmy and 26 Telly Awards and is widely-recognized as the premier production company serving the non-profit community.
The Anna Maria Island Art League will be welcoming Art League students of all levels to share their accomplishments and showcase the fine art and creative energy generated in the Art League’s classes and workshops. This is a juried show.
Opening Reception for the show will be on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 5:30-7:30pm, with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. This event is free and open to the public.
Submissions for this exhibit are Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday February 29, 2012 from 10-2pm. This exhibit will be on display at the Anna Maria Island Art League from March 2, to April 6, 2012.The Art League’s hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9:30-3:30pm.
Anna Maria Island Art League’s 24th Annual Springfest: Fine Arts And Crafts Festival will be held March 10 & 11, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Holmes Beach, City Hall Field Park.
This juried event has expanded its appeal to artists from eighteen states along with a strong contingent from Florida. The free admission festival is a tremendous boost to the local economy due to its perfect timing for Springtime visitors.
High quality fine art for sale at reasonable cost, Young at Art exhibit, music provided by the finest local bands along with scrumptious food. Works of original artwork cover almost every medium from oils and acrylics to the finest glass art and a broad range of hand-crafted jewelry.
Almost one hundred artists have been accepted for this festival from one hundred and fifty applications. Artists will be competing for cash awards totaling $2,500. The festival will be judged by Mr. Ken Hannon, Associate Executive Director of the Dunedin Fine Art Center. He has been an artist-in-residence at Hortobagyi Alkototabor in Hungary and the Union of Polish Artists/Photographers in Kielce, Poland. In addition to having judged many art shows and exhibitions in Michigan and Florida, his work has been widely exhibited and is included in many corporate and private collections.
Local bands include; Anna Maria Island String Band, Koko Ray, Gumbo Boogie Band, The Hurricanes, State Road 64, The Bontrager Sisters & The Anderson Brothers.
Residents and visitors who have experienced the festival for the last twenty-three years return year after year to enjoy the high quality art offered by the exhibitors and the excellent value. There will be prize drawing for pieces of art donated by the exhibitors.
Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six.
Phi Beta Psi – Beta Kappa Chapter will be holding their 3rd Annual Phi Beta Psi ”Run for a Cure“ Poker Run on Sunday, March 25th, 2012. Motorcycles will be leaving Woody’s River Roo - 5717 18th Street East, Ellenton, FL, with registration at 10:00 am and last bike out at 11:00. The riders will follow a preset route to build their Poker Hand with last bike back to Woody’s River Roo by 2:00pm. This event will feature live music, food & drink specials , 50/50 Raffle, Wheel Barrow of Booze giveaway, Gift Card Tree and Prizes for the Best and Worst Hand.
Phi Beta Psi Sorority is a national organization which was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1904. It is not affiliated in any way with a college or university, but is a civic organization. Beta Kappa Chapter is a local chapter in Bradenton, with the purpose of conducting fundraisers raising money for cancer research. Our aims through the years have been to promote fraternal relationship among our members, to assist in civic improvement in our communities, and of course, to further our National Project – Cancer Research.
Some recipients of research grants over the years have been Moffitt Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson, Florida Hospital, Children’s National Medical Center, and Palmer Eye Institute.
