”Camp High Five,“ a two-week, day camp for children ages 8-12, packs all of the fun of a traditional summer camp plus positive skill-building with lots of individual attention. The camp runs Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5:30 pm, July 30-August 10. Camp High Five is a new offering of Manatee Glens and is ideal for children who find typical camps stressful.
”Thanks to the people and programs at Manatee Glens, my daughter is now a positive 12-year-old girl. She has great people skills and is happy and confident in school,“ stated Brandi Wilson whose daughter has participated successfully in several programs at Manatee Glens.
Camp High Five includes the kinds of activities kids enjoy where challenging, constructive fun results in everyone’s success. ”We chose the name ÔCamp High Five’ because children are learning self-confidence and experiencing positive interactions and relationships with each other and camp counselors,“ explains Melanie Teves Bell, Ed.S. LMFT, Manatee Glens Vice President of Outpatient Services. ”The camp is also designed to help children succeed in class during the approaching school year where they may have struggled in the past.“
Dr. Bart Hodgens of Manatee Glens says, ”Camp High Five is fun with a purpose. The children will actually acquire learning and life skills while they’re playing games and being creative.“
With a ratio of one adult leader per three campers, there will be a great deal of individual instruction and coaching to help each child be a success. ”We give campers responsibilities to give a sense of belonging,“ adds Dr. Hodgens. ”We help children learn how to express themselves effectively with adults and peers. Campers will be able to make better choices in making friends and resist peer pressure.“
Just as practice is critical to improving music and sports skills, practice is also vital to improving social skills. Camp High Five provides many opportunities to put skills in action with a lot of fun including typical summer day camp activities such as kickball, art and creative projects. The camp is led by bachelor’s and master’s trained professionals.
The cost for the ten-day camp is $350, and space is limited. Camp will be held at 2121 26th Avenue East in Bradenton with indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. For more information and registration, call 941-782-4150.

Athlein is pleased to announce the 2012 recipients of the High School Football Camp Scholarships to the football camp at Rutgers University, June 24th – 26th, and The Steve Addizio Football Camp at Temple University, June 16th : Corey Crawford, Joe Bundrage, E.J. Burston,Shaquille Harris, Josh Hicks and Stevon Saunders. Recipients, all currently attending Palmetto High School, will be flying out to camps in just a few days.
The scholarships provided by Athlein allow for student athletes to travel to football camps in different areas of the country, gaining exposure to colleges and universities in those regions that would not be accessible otherwise. The scholarships provide for airline tickets, camp fees, lodging (if necessary) and transportation, on the ground, (if necessary). These football camps are more expense than these student athletes can afford on their own. Athlein providing this experience also gives these student athletes an opportunity to visit areas of the country that they have never been to before. First time experiences they carry with them for a lifetime, the student athletes are never the same when they return home.
Since the summer of 2010, Athlein has had 4 successes with two students finishing their freshmen college years this summer and two more leaving for college in the fall.
Marquis Green, now attending University of Tennessee @ Chattanooga and Chris Calloway, now attending Ball State/Indiana were the first students to participate in June, 2010. Both students made the traveling team at their respective colleges coming in as freshmen, which speaks to the talent that they bring with the scholarship.
Daqual Randall, attending WKU and Dallas Jackson, attending Jacksonville University/FL. this fall, are the recipients from the summer of 2011.
All four of these students are from Palmetto High School, Palmetto Fl. and attended the Rutgers Football Camp.
Dr. J. David Holcomb, Sarasota’s internationally recognized facial plastic and cosmetic laser surgeon, delivered a presentation at the 7th International Congress of the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies in Rome, Italy, on May 12, 2012. The meeting was attended by over 700 surgeons from 75 countries. Dr. Holcomb presented the latest advancements in Laser Assisted Facelift Surgery and Laser Assisted Facial Contouring (also known as AccuLiftª).
The International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies promotes and supports Facial Plastic Surgery throughout the world, with a primary focus on education. Dr. Holcomb was selected as a speaker based on his expertise in advanced laser skin rejuvenation technologies and his pioneering work in developing the laser assisted facial contouring procedure.
The AccuLift procedure removes excess fat deposits that have migrated downward in the mid- and lower facial areas as well as below the chin. The result is tighter skin and more defined features in just 30 minutes, with minimal down time.
Dr. Holcomb is double board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and American Board of Otolaryngology, and fellowship-trained through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a past president of the Florida Society of Facial Plastic Surgeons as well as the Sarasota County Medical Society.

On June 11, 2012, our community will end the killing of healthy and treatable animals, even if it just for one day. Manatee County Animal Services will join a nationwide effort to empty the shelters the good way. Adorable puppies, kittens, cats and dogs – all available for adoption – will put their best paw forward to encourage residents to open their hearts and homes and adopt.
To help them, we are hosting an adoption event where all of these adorable puppies, kittens, cats and dogs available for adoption will be only $10.00 each. This adoption fee includes spay/neuter, health check, vaccinations, microchip and license certificate/tag. This adoption special will be available at both the Downtown Bradenton and Palmetto locations from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Our Palmetto address is 305 - 25th Street West; Downtown Bradenton address is 1002 B - Manatee Avenue West. For more information call 941-742-5933.
”Help us help the animals get out of the shelter and into their forever homes,“ states Kris Weiskopf. ” If we all work together we can become a No Kill Community.“
What is a day? There are many ways to answer that question. A day is 24 hours. A day is how we measure how much time we spend at work. A day can be something we look forward to, a celebration of some kind. But in U.S. animal shelters, a day represents 10,411 lives needlessly lost. To most people, June 11 is Just One Day. But, June 11 is a day that could change everything for 10,411 companion animals, and a day that can change the world. On June 11, 2012, we could be a No Kill nation.
