Two local women from Florida’s West Coast Region have been selected as the winners of the American Red Cross 2011-2012 Presidential Award of Excellence: Jeannie Slater, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Southwest Florida Chapter, and Natasha Salazar, Chapter & Youth Program Manager for the Tampa Bay Chapter.
”Both of these extraordinary women are dedicated, passionate leaders who more than deserve the honor of this recognition,“ said Linda Carbone, CEO of Florida’s West Coast Region.
The Presidential Award for Excellence is presented to American Red Cross employees and volunteers who have demonstrated superior job performance that aligns with the organization’s priorities in at least one of three key areas: cost cutting, revenue generation, mission fulfillment.
Jeannie Slater is a long-time committed Red Cross Volunteer, Board Chair and Tiffany Circle member who lead her Chapter Board to a record giving amount in FY11. She led the charge by example, giving personal matching funds, meeting with community leaders to secure gifts for the campaign and also by sharing the information with other Red Cross Chapters across the country. Her dedication was extraordinary and resulted in a program of success that inspired her chapter and others in the division to structure a whole new kind of matching gift campaign to leverage funds to raise record amounts for the organization. Jeannie and her husband, Chuck, were active fundraisers and advocates in the community, engaging other community business leaders in the campaign as well as the Tiffany Circle, hosting an event in her home to encourage women to join us in our lifesaving mission.
”Her warmth and welcoming attitude helped secure the growth of the Circle and was part of the reason the Region won the Best New Tiffany Program award,“ said Carbone. ”Jeannie's leadership and dedication to raise funds to support the mission of the Red Cross has been extraordinary and she is well deserving of this award.“
Natasha Salazar has a passion and vision for youth in the American Red Cross & how they can join our vital lifesaving mission at an early age to become a part of our Red Cross family for life. Natasha's inclusive and empowering management style inspires youth volunteers to manage and grow the program so that it thrives to new success each year- all while giving the youth in charge the leadership and management skills they will carry and employ for life. During the time Natasha has managed the Chapter’s youth program the Chapter has seen a significant growth in enrollment and efficacy. In just the first 2 months of the summer of 2011, the youth program taught lifesaving skills such as water safety, proper hand washing and basic first aid to over 10,000 kids in the Tampa Bay area. That's twice as many kids as was taught in the program in 2008. Natasha’s leadership and guidance has also played a vital role in the success of the Tampa Bay Chapter USF Red Cross Club to be the nationally recognized model for collegiate clubs across the country. Early on Natasha structured the USF Red Cross Club to be an integral part of the Chapter. The Club members participate in all of the Chapter’s programs including teaching classes in health & safety (they taught a CPR 250 class last year & are aiming to teach 500 people CPR at once this year with an eye to break the world record within the next few years), participating in our disaster preparedness classes and on our disaster action teams, regularly volunteering at the VA Hospital and supporting our Caregivers’ Conference in support of our Service to Armed Forces mission and finally, raising funds for the mission through fundraising events like the Race for the Red Cross.
”The Tampa Chapter’s excellent youth program is due in large part to Natasha’s vision and management which allows us to reach thousands more individuals in our community,“ said Carbone. ”Her energy, enthusiasm and excellence in everything that she does make her an excellent candidate for this award for mission fulfillment.“
The process for nominations and selection for the Presidential Award of Excellence is extensive. Numerous individuals from every region in the division were nominated to the division level. The division committee could then select one volunteer and one paid staff member in each category as a division award winner and then they became nominees at the Red Cross National Headquarters department level of Humanitarian Services. All nine Red Cross divisions throughout the country selected nominees for the NHQ department level. Jeannie and Natasha’s nominations were then selected from the nine divisions as the winners of the National Presidential Awards.
