Sweetbay Supermarket Donates $7500 to Family Partnership Center

Mr. Potter reports the funds will be used not only for parenting education program delivery, but also to promote exercise and good nutrition. Program participants will be encouraged to include daily exercise and proper dietary guidelines in their lifestyle as well as model positive behaviors for their children.

Our goal at The Family Partnership Center is to reach 2,200 local at risk parents and children during 2011. Our primary mission is to strengthen families. Thanks to Sweetbay, these parents will not only be better equipped to deal with current economic hardships, but the families will become stronger and healthier to create a safe and nuturing environment for their children.

Shinn & Company’s Gruters Receives Florida CPA License


Shinn & Company LLC is pleased to announce that Joe Gruters, staff accountant, has received his Florida CPA license.

Blake Medical Center Announces their 2010 Frist Humanitarian Award Recipients

Blake Medical Center is proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 Frist Humanitarian Award to employee, Tami Spyker and volunteer, Brenda Parker.   Both recipients are admired and respected members of the Blake Medical Center family.  Nominations were sent from patients, colleagues and hospital staff.

Tami Spyker, Speech Therapy Supervisor, coordinates the Stroke Support Group at Blake Medical Center as well as trains volunteers for the Peer Visitor Program, a program where stroke survivors and their families visit with new stroke patients.  Tami is also a Neighborhood Watch Program Manager and works closely with the Bradenton Police Department.  In addition, Tamara provides safety training for women in the Bradenton area. She has been described by her peers as a joy to work with as she never ceases to amaze them with regard to her work ethic, productivity, gentleness, efficiency, friendliness toward all and her positive attitude.

Eight years ago, Brenda Parker became a volunteer at Blake Medical Center and has consistently and selflessly contributed her time, heart and resources to support the needs of our patients and their families.  She faithfully visits long-term Rehab patients with ”Mr. Miagi“, her certified therapy dog, who is a tremendous help in bringing spark and cheer to arouse laughter in our patients, their family members, doctors and nurses. She also visits a number of nursing homes in our community with Mr. Miagi in hopes to improve people’s moods with their excitement and enthusiasm. Brenda has been an outstanding asset to our hospital and town, tirelessly donating a vast amount of her time & energy for the greater benefit of our facility and community.

National recipients will be honored in the spring at a reception at the company’s Nashville, Tenn., headquarters.

Informational seminars for veterans planned as Manatee County celebrates National County Government Month


This April, to commemorate National County Government Month, Manatee County Government will host a series of Friday morning seminars designed to assist local veterans in obtaining service related benefits.

Each year counties across the country celebrate National County Government Month to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government. This year’s theme is "Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces and Their Families."

”Manatee County offers our veteran population an extensive set of services and programs to assist them and their families in obtaining the benefits they earned while serving our country,“ says Brenda Rogers, Community Services Director. ”We see these seminars as the perfect opportunity to highlight those programs and to celebrate National County Month.“

The schedule is as follows:

á        April 1 –  Health Care Benefits and Entitlements:
This discussion will cover topics regarding the entire VA Health Care System and the healthcare benefits available to qualifying Veterans;

á        April 8 – Non-Service Connected and Widow Pensions:
This discussion will cover the benefit and entitlement requirements necessary to obtain either Non-Service Connected or Widow Pensions, along with the amount of compensation that is typically awarded;

á        April 15 – Service Connected Disability and Compensation:
This discussion will cover the definition of a Service-Connected disability and what documentation is required by the VA before a disability is determined as Service Connected.  Award amounts and entitlements will also be addressed;

á        April 22 – Burial Benefits and the Sarasota National Cemetery:
This discussion will cover all burial benefits and entitlements including the eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery such as the new Sarasota National Cemetery.  

á        April 29 – Open Forum Q & A on Veteran Administration Benefits and Services:
This open forum will be a questions and answers presentation along with a discussion of VA benefits not previously addressed in the seminar series such as home loans, education, adaptive equipment request, etc.


All presentations will be held in the first floor chambers of the Manatee County Administrative Center, 1112 Manatee Ave., W., in downtown Bradenton.  Seats are limited and will be given to those who arrive first.
