Dr. Thomas Crisp, assistant professor of Reading in the College of Education at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, has received the Marguerite Cogorno Radencich Award honoring Florida's Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading.

The award is given by the Florida Reading Association to one faculty member per year who is an innovator and leader making substantial contributions in the field of reading education. The Florida Reading Association represents over 6,900 members who are actively interested in reading and writing instruction. It is composed of local chapters and special interest groups including the Council for Early Literacy, the Council for Adult and Family Literacy, Reading Supervisors of Florida, Florida Organization of Teacher Educators in Reading, and the Secondary Reading Council.
The Florida Reading Association is an affiliate of the International Reading Association, a 90,000 member nonprofit educational organization devoted to the promotion of lifetime reading habits and the improvement of language and literacy instruction.
Crisp was nominated for the award by Brittany Hiller, a recent USF Sarasota-Manatee graduate and fourth grade teacher at The Out-of-Door-Academy. He will receive a plaque, an invitation to the annual Florida Reading Association conference, and a feature story in Florida Reading Quarterly.
”I nominated Dr. Crisp for this award because I wanted to show the Florida Reading Association how his scholarship, teaching, course assignments, mentorship and service all make him an outstanding teacher educator,“ Hiller said. ”He is innovative, bringing leading researchers into his class via Skype and other technology so that students could ask questions Ôface-to-face.’ His dedication to his students, his contributions to the field of reading and literature, and his leadership make him an exceptional candidate for this award.“
Crisp's research is primarily focused on children's and adolescent literature, reading, and literacy instruction. His area of research includes balanced approaches to comprehensive literacy instruction, literary analysis, critical examination of texts, pedagogical and curricular uses of books, and the cultural construction of literature, childhood, and child culture across time.
”Although it goes without saying, what a citation like this ultimately reflects is the teaching/learning culture fostered across USF Sarasota-Manatee: a university with high expectations for students and that provides exemplary learning experiences and opportunities,“ said Crisp. ”I'm proud to be part of a university that values and supports teaching and instruction. I've learned a great deal from all my colleagues in the College of Education.“
Students in Crisps’ classes participate in literature discussion groups, compare today’s children’s literature to that of the past, and visit local libraries and bookstores to examine the way they are constructed and why. He also co-chaired this year’s extremely successful USF Sarasota-Manatee Children’s Literary Symposium.
”Dr. Crisp is an outstanding educator who is a role model for students,“ said Dr. Terry Osborn, dean of the College of Education at USF Sarasota-Manatee. ”His dedication to teaching and course development challenges students to expand their educational horizons.“Cody Giltner has joined the team at EDGE Real Estate Transaction Management as a Field Services Specialist. He will provide important services for clients such as measuring rooms, installing signs and lock boxes, attending inspections and providing vendor access. These are all tasks that require a great deal of attention to detail and time. By having EDGE oversee, Realtors are freed to do the activities that are most productive for them. Giltner brings 5 years of experience in property management and real estate services.
EDGE has quickly gained a reputation for its Contract to Close services that help Realtors better manage their business. The team consists of licensed non-competing real estate professionals who are familiar with the industry in order to help Realtors leverage their time, eliminate paperwork and increase productivity. Giltner and others on the team maintain communication with everyone, complete the necessary tasks for clients, and keep them in the loop every step of the way.
Since beginning in April, EDGE Real Estate Transaction Management has served many of the area’s Realtors, managed about 20 transactions and saving Realtor clients hundreds of hours of work.
”The result is, Realtors are free to do what they do best–market properties and gain listings. They’re selling more homes and better serving their clients,“ explains Annmarie Tucker, Closing Manager at EDGE.
Marjorie Broughton, President of Rock Solid Construction Group, Inc., is the winner of The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Rock Solid is a Sarasota-based construction firm offering new construction, renovation and build-out services for residential and commercial clients, and general construction services to public and private sector markets in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Lee, Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, DeSoto and Highland counties.
In a video presented at the chamber’s annual Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Small Business Awards luncheon, Broughton commented that she attributed much of the success of her company to the relationships she has built since its formation, stating, ”As a small company you are sometimes limited as to how much time and resources you have available to develop new business, so effective use of personal contacts and building strong networking skills is essential. Once you’ve made the connection, been awarded the project, and exceeded the expectations of your client, they will be your best promoters and will refer you to others. It’s important to constantly build on all your relationships and to support your community as you grow a business.“
Broughton, Rock Solid’s majority shareholder, started the company in 2005 and received Florida State Certification as a Minority Business Enterprise in 2007. By combining her previous marketing experience with her family’s passion for home renovations, she has turned Rock Solid into a thriving business that has been selected for various city and county projects, several Sarasota YMCA new construction and renovation projects, new residential construction, residential remodeling, and commercial build-outs.
Current projects include working as the minority construction partner for the Siemens Environmental Corp./City of Sarasota Comprehensive Environmental Analysis and Construction Renovation program; with Hillsborough County/HUD Rehabilitation/New Construction Affordable Housing Services for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, and with Manhattan-Kraft Construction Company on the construction of the City of Sarasota’s new community center at Robert Taylor Park and Manhattan-Kraft’s construction of the new ambulatory surgery/outpatient diagnostic support center at the VA hospital in Cape Coral, Florida.
Rock Solid focuses on working with architects to build homes that are both environmentally sustainable and universal in design. The firm is currently building a custom home on Floyd Street west of the Trail in Sarasota designed by CMSA Architecture that will feature a high tech, energy efficient inversion HVAC system, cistern collection and water purification system, and solar heating, as well as being designed to meet the future needs of the owners as they age in place.
As a strong supporter of numerous area charitable organizations, Rock Solid has contributed over $100,000 in funds raised, donations, and services provided to such organizations as United Way of Sarasota, G.Wiz Science Museum, Girls Inc. of Sarasota County, Pines of Sarasota, Sarasota YMCA, and Sarasota Cultural Council.
