The chaos and confusion that accompany war and disaster can separate families when they need each other the most. When this happens, the Red Cross joins the search across international borders, offering a unique service that allows families to reconnect.
Such is the case of Lili Farkas of Sarasota, Florida. Lili was only 14 years old during the war. They were terrible times or as she stated, ”God awful.“
In 1945, during World War II, the Russians came in to liberate Hungary from the Nazis, but when the Communists took over in 1949, liberation became domination and the Hungarian government was totally subordinate to Soviet control. There was freedom in the air on October 23, 1956 when Hungarian students began demonstrating against the Communist government. The Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had died three years before; and in March of 1956, Nikita Khrushchev had spoken out against Stalin at the 20th Party Congress. Repression was easing within the Soviet Union, and the leaders of the Satellite countries like Gomulka of Poland and Nagy of Hungary felt they could try to liberalize. Led by students and workers, the spontaneous Hungarian Revolution began. The Soviets, however, felt that they were losing control in Hungary, so they sent in their tanks and troops. Even though America and the world heard Hungary's call for help, only Red Cross help was given and Hungary was on its own. The Freedom Fighters fought hard, but by November 4th, the Hungarians had lost.
There were thousands who died. Over 26,000 were put on trial, and of those 13,000 were imprisoned and about 300 were executed. Nearly 200,000 refugees escaped into Austria or Yugoslavia and eventually started new lives in other parts of the world such as England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. It wasn't until 1989, with the fall of the Berlin Wall that the Soviet Union finally collapsed.
Lili participated in the Hungarian Revolution and worked underground. She was a political prisoner and served 2 ? years in Budapest and in a northeastern Hungarian prison. Her husband, Imre was sentenced to death but later was commuted to serve life in prison.
In 1956, Imre escaped from an Austrian refugee camp. Imre and Lili were reunited and through the Rockefeller Foundation, were able to come to the United States arriving on Christmas Eve, 1956.
Since coming to the U.S., she and her husband have been very successful, had two daughters and three grandchildren who live in Holland.
However, Mrs. Farkas lost touch with her family in Hungary. But her family didn’t forget her. Judit Bojthy Hajda, Lili’s second cousin contacted the Red Cross to help locate her long lost relative.
Cindy Desmond, Director of Volunteers, Client Services and Training for the Southwest Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross was the local caseworker who had the privilege of speaking to Lili to inform her that her second cousin wanted to connect with her.
”At first, Lili was hesitant,“ said Cindy. ”Then the memories started to come back.“
After 76 years, Lili was delighted to correspond with her second cousin. They talk on the phone and send photos to each other over the internet. Their telephone conversations brought back memories that Lili had forgotten like the way they sent packages overseas throughout the years to friends and relatives.
American Red Cross caseworkers at local chapters around the United States like Cindy, help families locate missing relatives by working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations in nearly every country around the world.
Once a family member is found, the Red Cross helps them reconnect. Messages can be very brief, but the three short words, ”I am alive“ may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught relatives half a world away. Red Cross messages can also be exchanged between family and their loved ones in refugee camps and detention centers to allow them to keep in contact and share family news.
This past year, the American Red Cross helped reconnect more than 4,200 families – bridging years of separation to renew critical links between new communities in the U.S. and their families around the world.
NOTE: Media interviews are available. For contact information for Lili Fargas and Cindy Desmond, please email your request to McGuireJa@usa.redcross.org
