Carlos Garcia Returns as Manager
The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced their minor league managerial and coaching assignments for the 2012 season. The announcement was made by Larry Broadway, Pirates Director of Minor League Operations.
Carlos Garcia will return to Class-A Bradenton after guiding the Marauders to a playoff berth in 2011 in his first year as the Marauders’ Manager. Prior to last season, Garcia served as First Base Coach and Infield Instructor for the Pirates Major League team in 2010. Garcia is currently managing Navegantes del Magallanes in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Garcia will be joined by returning Pitching Coach Mike Steele. New additions for the 2012 season will include Coach Kory DeHaan and Athletic Trainer Dru Scott, who will take over for the Marauders’ former Athletic Trainer Keito Homma.

We need your votes! Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County, Inc. has entered GOOD Maker’s December challenge. GOOD Maker partnered with Brookside Foods to give a $5,000 grant for a deserving community-based non-profit. Take Stock entered a project focused on building our mentor and student advocacy program. With votes from local community supporters, we have the opportunity to create national awareness for Take Stock in Children. Voting closes December 9.
It costs $12,000 for one student to go through six years of our program and earn college tuition. The most crucial part of our program is mentoring. Mentors help build the character of these individual students. The $5,000 would go towards mentoring and student advocacy.

The Independent Running Retailers of America, The Competitor Group and Formula 4 Media, LLC recognized On A Shoestring, Inc. as one of the 50 Best Running Stores in America. On A Shoestring was the only store in Southwest Florida that received this award for 2011. Owners Steve and Sharon Litschauer along with General Manager Jim Larsen will accept this award at the annual running retail industry conference in Austin, Texas on Friday, December 9, 2011.

In addition to an exceptional product line, On A Shoestring has a passionate, professional staff and offers service dedicated to runners, walkers, and fitness enthusiasts.
In addition to customer feedback from over 1,000 consumers, more than 200 stores were mystery shopped by The Franklin Resource Group, the top retail merchandising company in the sports category. Those scores, based on customer service and the in-store experience are combined with the store’s environment and community involvement. The final list of the 50 Best Running Stores in America will be featured in The Competitor publications in December 2011.
The award for the 50 Best Running Retailers in America was created to recognize not only the 50 best stores in the country but also more than 700 independent stores that serve the American runner.
The Independent Running Retailers of America (IRRA) is a non-profit association of specialty running retailers promoting the interests of all independent specialty running retailers in the United States and Canada.
pThe East Manatee Bulldog’s Jr Midget Cheerleading Squad Placed Second in their division at the Southeast Pop Warner Regional Cheer Championships yesterday. The competition was held at the Silver Spur Arena in Kissimmee. Their division is Novice Small Squad. The Southeast Region consists of FL, GA, AL & MS. There were 15 squads competing in the Jr Midget Novice Small Squad division.
They will now go on to compete in the Pop Warner National Cheer Championship at Disney’s Wide World of Sports next week.Cat Depot is pleased to announce that Karen Slomba has joined the staff as director of operations. Prior to accepting the position, Ms. Slomba was director of operations for seven years at Ten Lives Club, Inc. in Buffalo, NY. Ms. Slomba was instrumental in implementing Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project for Ten Lives Club, and she was a founding member of the Animal Alliance of Western NY. Ms. Slomba brings her skills and expertise to the Cat Depot team.
Cat Depot, a rescue, adoption, education and resource center, is dedicated to helping abandoned, homeless and injured cats and kittens with medical care, food and love. A leader in feline health care and mental well-being, Cat Depot houses over 100 cats and kittens on any day. Cat Depot has changed the destiny of thousands of formerly homeless felines, currently living joyful lives because of donations and support by members and volunteers.
Fifth grade students from Rogers Garden Elementary School presented art to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM). The project, initiated by Dr. Marie Byrd-Blake, a professor in the College of Education at USFSM along with student club PRIDE (promoting, recruiting, increasing diverse educators) was designed to encourage the students to begin exploring what college is all about. The students, 5th grade teachers and Principal Ann Broomes from Rogers Garden came to USFSM to officially present the pieces and take a tour of the campus.
