Community Pirates and Marauders Make Bowls to Fight Local Hunger

Posted

BRADENTON – The Bradenton Marauders and Pittsburgh Pirates will make bowls for the 2012 ”Empty Bowls“ luncheon to benefit The Food Bank of Manatee County. Players will be making bowls at ArtCenter Manatee on Thursday May 24, and Saturday June 2. The bowls are then used at the food banks' annual ”Empty Bowls“ luncheon, where attendees choose one of the bowls to eat from.

In past years, ArtCenter Manatee, Palmetto ArtCenter, and local potters have contributed over 1,000 unique ceramic bowls for the event, where a meal of soup and bread is served, symbolic of the hunger struggle in our community. 100% of the proceeds will go to help local individuals and families in need.

The ”Empty Bowls“ concept was developed by a high school teacher in 1991 in Michigan to involve art students in charitable giving. Now the nationwide independent event supports local food banks on a community level and is usually held in October to recognize ”World Food Day.“
