County Honors Mary Sheppard For Community Service

MANATEE--The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed December 14, 2010 Mary Sheppard Day in Manatee County at Tuesday’s regular meeting in county chambers. Commissioner Michael Gallen read the proclamation honoring Mary Sheppard for her many years of service on the planning commission and civic activities.

Commissioner Joe McClash commended Mary Sheppard for ”being a role model for the community.“ Commissioner Michael Gallen said ”she was an inspiration" to him.

Mary Sheppard was a long-time member of the Manatee County Planning Commission, serving for 19 years until November when she was not elected by the BCC for another term.

She has participated in planning for TBARTA, One Bay, Imagine Manatee and the Sierra Club among many civic organizations in Manatee County. Her many interests include the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code and maintaining natural resources. Mary Sheppard has been a familiar face and voice at local government meetings for many years.

She thanked the board for the honor and said she will continue to be active in the community.

The planning commission makes recommendations on zoning and land use ordinances to the Manatee County Commissioners.
