DOGE Targets NOAA in Latest Round of Job Cuts

Posted

WASHINGTON — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the latest federal agency to have been targeted by Elon Musk's DOGE committee. This week, the Commerce Department began laying off hundreds of employees at the world's top climate science and weather forecasting agency.

NOAA monitors weather, issues warnings, and studies the Earth's climate. It also operates weather satellites and works to protect marine life. Cuts included staff at the National Weather Service, despite hurricane season starting in just a few months.

The National Weather Service had already been short-staffed. Media figures in weather reporting and meteorologists spoke out on the agency's critical role in providing accurate weather data and warnings prior to the cuts.

The NOAA layoffs are part of a broader decimation of climate-related agencies, including the EPA, Energy Department, Department of Agriculture, and the Interior Department.
