BRADENTON, Fla. – Douglas Michael, 93 of Bradenton, Florida, and Urbana, Ohio, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose extraordinary life touched the hearts of many.

Born on Sept. 2, 1931 in Dayton, Ohio, Doug was the son of the late Kenneth and Vinny Studebaker Michael.

He graduated from Olive Branch High School and attended The Ohio State University, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to agriculture and family. Doug met the "catch of his life," Phyllis Bridge, and they married on Jan. 22, 1955. Shortly after, Doug proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed in Germany. There, he learned the values of discipline and dedication that would guide him throughout his life.

Upon returning, Doug and Phyllis settled in Champaign County, Ohio, where they created a family filled with love and laughter. Doug's farming career began alongside his father, and he soon transformed their family operation into what is now known as Michael Farms. His innovative spirit led him to introduce cutting-edge production techniques, including the center pivot irrigation system in Champaign County, revolutionizing local farming practices. Doug's impact on the potato industry was profound.

His leadership in the agricultural community was remarkable. He served as President of the Ohio Potato Growers Association and was honored to be the President of the National Potato Council. His accolades include the distinguished Potato Man of the Year Award, the Golden Potato Award, and his induction into the Ohio Agriculture Council Hall of Fame in 1998.

Doug established the Michael Farms Building at the Champaign County Fairgrounds to promote local agriculture. He also created a scholarship program to support youth pursuing agricultural education at The Ohio State University. He was immensely proud that all of his children graduated from OSU, fostering a lasting Buckeye legacy. Doug became an inspiring figure in his community, giving back through his service and leadership in various organizations, including 4-H, Farm Bureau, and as a Rotarian for many years. Doug and Phyllis enjoyed extensive travels, creating cherished experiences. He approached these adventures humbly, enriching his own life and the lives of those who shared them.

For over 30 years, Doug found joy as a commercial fishing captain in Bradenton, Florida. His love for fishing was infectious; he welcomed anyone and everyone on his boat, teaching them the ropes along the way. Doug's adventurous spirit and generous heart created lasting memories for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Despite losing his hands in a tragic farming accident at the age of 28, Doug never viewed himself as handicapped. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children, emphasizing that the passion for one's work was more important than the job, often expressing that he had never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did. Known for his great sense of humor, he was affectionately called "Lucky Doug" and often proclaimed, "Yeah, I'm Lucky Doug – no hands, one eye, Lucky Doug. "

Doug's legacy will forever be carried on by his family, all of whom he adored. His love for family was evident in everything he did, and his impact on their lives will be felt for generations to come. As a man of faith, he was actively involved in his church, and his beliefs guided him in his daily life. He had many friends around the country, and his warmth and kindness will be missed by all who knew him. Doug Michael lived a life rich with purpose, compassion, and achievement, and he leaves behind a legacy that will forever be celebrated.

Doug passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, and as we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we remember him not just for his accolades but for the love and joy he brought into our lives. His spirit will continue to inspire us to embrace life with the same passion and dedication he exemplified. Rest in peace, Doug. You will be forever missed and always remembered.
