Bradenton, Florida - Erla Shafer Youmans, a cherished matriarch and a distinguished former Capitol Hill administrator, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 8, 2025, in Bradenton, FL. Born on September 21, 1935, in Washington D.C., Erla's life was a testament to her loving, generous, and interesting nature.

Erla's professional journey began in 1958 as a secretary/stenographer in a congressional office. Her dedication and work ethic propelled her through the ranks, leading her to the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation, later renamed Transportation and Infrastructure.

Her remarkable 38-year career culminated in her retirement as the Administrator of that Department, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and service. Upon retirement, Erla relocated to Florida, where, for 20 years, she devoted her time and energy as a volunteer at Sea Breeze Elementary School, making a profound impact in the lives of countless children. Erla was an avid player of bingo and a solver of crossword puzzles. Her love for reading, soap operas, and primetime dramas was well-known among her family, as was her fondness for Hallmark movies. Erla's greatest joy, however, was her family.

She leaves behind four daughters Linda, Julie, Janet, and Traci; four grandchildren Mikelle, Devin, Jonathan, and Michael; and two great-grandchildren Harper and Kensley. Services will be private for the family. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street West, Bradenton, FL 34209, is in charge of arrangements.
