BRADENTON – If you're looking for something to do with that special someone for the St. Valentine's Holiday, or are just looking for a good excuse to get out of the house today, the Manasota area has several offerings. Here are a few.
 
 
The Orchid Show: Celebrating 40 Years at Selby Gardens

Selby Gardens will have its opening day for The Orchid Show today. The event will run through March 27 and will include special lectures and classes such as "For the Love of Orchids," a February 17 lecture by Selby's orchidologist Dr. Antonio Toscano deBrito, and a keynote lecture on March 11 by Marc Hachadourian, curator of the Orchid Collection and Manager of the Nolen Greenhouses for the New York Botanical Garden.

To find Cortez Village on a map, locate Bradenton which is about 50 miles south of Tampa. Find State Road 684, known locally as Cortez Road or 44th Avenue, and go west to the beaches.

Come join the drum circle that plays every Sunday at one of the area's finest beaches. Known to draw large crowds, the circle winds down around sundown but usually goes until 9 – 10 p.m.

The Ringling Museum will have an array of special exhibitions on display today. "Glittering Grandeur: Spectacles Under the Big Top" will feature illustrated poster designs promoting circus shows such as P.T. Barnum and the Ringlings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "Ink, Silk and Gold" will feature Islamic art from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and "Samurai: The Way of the Warrior" displays nearly 70 intriguing historical objects, many related to Samurai warriors, from the Stibbert Museum's Japanese exhibition in Florence, Italy.
