Floyd Charles Edler, affectionately known as "Bubba," passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep on September 22, 2022, at his home in Bradenton, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy Edler, daughter, Michele Angell, son-in-law, Dean Donnelly, brother, Dwayne "Skip" Vath, and sister-in-law, Dee Vath. Floyd was born in 1947 in Susanville, CA and later was raised in Grass Valley, CA. From a young age he was very ambitious, earning every badge as a Boy Scout. After high school in 1965, he joined the United States Navy. In the Navy, his squadron VA-152 was deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Floyd fought the ship’s 1966 fire and personally carried two people to safety. Floyd earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree in business administration, and another master’s degree in public administration. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in four states. In the 1970s he worked for Bechtel Power building the Alaska Pipeline. From 1982 to 1993, he worked for Illinois Power Company as a Director and Project Manager. From 1993 to 2003 he was Superintendent and Emergency Director at New York Power Authority Nuclear Plant, now Entergy. At Shaw Group from 2003-2006, he was Director of Operations. And from 2006-retirement, Floyd was Director of Construction for Day & Zimmerman at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant and in the home office in Lancaster, PA.
After retirement, he built Mean Deans Local Kitchen in Bradenton, Florida with his daughter and son-in-law. He was very proud of the restaurant and could often be seen there wearing one of his many Disney t-shirts and showing friends all the work they did (and were still doing) to expand.
Floyd had many hobbies including his interest in gambling which began when he was a bouncer and security guard for celebrities in Reno, NV during his college years. He loved to travel and made it a point to visit every state. He particularly enjoyed visiting the national parks and hiking the mountains out west. In his younger years, he skied every major ski slope in North America. One of his favorite activities was to visit Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco and eat Dungeness crab fresh off the boat. Floyd lived life the way he wanted to and left the way he wanted to.
He will be profoundly missed.
