Foundation Accepting Applications for Gulf Coast Leadership Institute

Posted

VENICE -- City of North Port's Erin Bryce said it's the best program that she’s ever been through.  Englewood Bank’s LaReine Duckworth called it a highlight of her career. Lain Webb of the Sarasota Ballet said it gave him confidence and another way to move forward, and said it's ”one of the best things around.“

All three are among the 54 professionals and volunteers who have graduated from Gulf Coast Leadership Institute, a leadership development initiative of Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.  This spring, two dozen more aspiring and veteran leaders have an opportunity to join their growing network.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2010 class of Gulf Coast Leadership Institute.  The Foundation will select up to 25 participants from across the region, which includes Manatee County, for this three-month leadership-development program.  Applications are available online at gulfcoastcf.org.  The application deadline is April 23.

Leadership Institute participants will take part in seven training sessions in Venice from May through July.  Training will be led by faculty of the Fanning Institute, a public service and outreach unit of the University of Georgia that is recognized nationally for its leadership, community, and economic development programs.  Leadership Institute participants will receive all training and resources at no cost.  Participants must commit to use their newly acquired skills for the long-term benefit of the community.

"Gulf Coast Leadership Institute provides both aspiring and veteran leaders with an opportunity to improve their individual skills and connect with other leaders across our community," said Teri A Hansen, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Foundation.  "The real success of this program lies in the diversity of experiences that the participants bring."

Class members will be selected to represent the public, private, and independent sectors.  Professionals and community volunteers of all ages are encouraged to apply.  "Last year’s class included a video producer from Venice in his twenties and a retired college professor from Sarasota who celebrated her 80th birthday during the program," noted Hansen.  "We want these leaders to form a network with vast and varied expertise, one that they can tap in the future to help improve their communities."
