Catch of the Week

Greg Witt caught and released this 42-inch redfish while fishing with friends on last Wednesday night.

BRADENTON – Too hot to fish? The countdown begins for this year's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, which started yesterday --  check out the complete lineup here! As far as fishing goes, the rising water temperatures have caused fishing action to decrease. Most fishermen will have luck going out before, or after the sun goes down.

Weekly Fishing Report

Tarpon fishing has slowed and the hot water is making it difficult to fish. In the heat of the day, fish are dormant. Only the early bird or late bird will catch the big one. Night fishing is a different story. Giant reds seem to be coming alive after dark. Local anglers Greg Witt and Bradley Hume reported catching a 42-inch redfish on Wednesday night.

This week, other inshore fishermen have reported landing small trout and snook in grass flats at a depth of around four feet. Bigger fish are hiding out in deep canals and holes, and getting them to bite will take skill. Use a weight to allow the bait to sink, then let the best fisherman on the boat to get to work -- the rod holder. When it comes to summer, the slower the better.

Offshore will offer some bette action, as amberjack are now in season and put up one heck of a fight. Use a GPS to find offshore wrecks. Try sardines or cigar minnows as bait. Heavy convention tackle is needed to land a big one!
