CATCH OF THE WEEK

Marshall Dinerman, from, Atlanta, Georgia, had good action with Spanish mackerel and trout on a couple of trips. The Spanish mackerel was caught on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly and the trout on a DOA Deadly Combo.

BRADENTON – Happy Martin Luther King Day! For those of you lucky to have off work, NOAA is predicting nice weather but choppy conditions offshore. Blue crab closures are ending early in Northwest Florida. Look for albies feeding near the surface and tripletail around crab trap buoys.

  • Northwest Florida blue crab trap closure ending early
Recreational and commercial blue crab traps may be placed back in state waters (shore to 9 nautical miles) from the Florida/Alabama state line through the Franklin/Wakulla county line starting Saturday, Jan. 10.
Traps had to be removed from the water as part of a 10-day closure that started Jan. 5, but this closure ended early because efforts to remove lost and abandoned traps have been completed.
This and other similar closures give groups authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) the opportunity to identify and retrieve lost and abandoned blue crab traps from the water.

Capt. Rick DePaiva, from Ft. Myers, FL, battles a

tarpon jumped on a fly while fishing the coastal gulf

with Capt. Rick Grassett.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, blues and Spanish mackerel on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay, snook in the ICW near Venice and snook, trout and flounder in the Terra Ceia area on CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Deadly Combos, DOA Shrimp and flies during the past week.

Keith McClintock and Victor Feldman, both from Ill., fished the Terra Ceia area with me on Monday. They caught and released trout, flounder and several snook on CAL jigs with shad tails. Dean Fields, from Indianapolis, Ind., snook fished with me in the ICW near Venice on Tuesday evening. We fished lighted docks and he caught and released a few snook and a trout on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly.

Marshall Dinerman and his son Michael, from Atlanta, Georgia, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday. They had some action with trout, including one that was more than 3-pounds, on CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Deadly Combos and an Ultra Hair Clouser fly on deep grass flats on both sides of the bay. Martin Marlowe, from NY, snook fished with me on Wednesday evening in the ICW near Venice and caught and released 8 or 10 snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly.

Tom Lamb, from Geneva, Switzerland and Roy Glah, from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday afternoon. Despite a slow tide, action was steady. We fished deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where they caught and released several blues, Spanish mackerel and trout on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Shrimp.

Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Look for reds and big trout mixed with mullet schools on shallow flats and edges of bars. Afternoons may fish better than mornings when water is cool. Catch and release night snook fishing may also be a good option depending on conditions.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Rick Grassett
