Anglers Can Help FWC Catch Data on Red Snapper, Other Reef Fish

  • By filling out a survey card or making a phone call, anglers can provide Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists valuable information about red snapper and other reef fish.
  • Biologists distribute survey cards year-round to anglers at public areas, including boat ramps, fishing piers and marinas along the Gulf coast of Florida, to gather information about fishing trips targeting red snapper.
  • This information includes where a red snapper is caught and released, the type of fishing equipment used, the size of the fish and its condition when released. Fisheries researchers and managers use the data from these reported catch-and-release trips to assess the status of this important recreational fishery.

Captain Chad Gamble’s Fishing Report

The Gulf of Mexico has been invaded by air breathing, silver scaled, drag screaming monsters! Yes the tarpon are here and they are chewing aboard the ”Hook and Ladder.“

The last few weeks have been awesome with multiple fish landed over 130 pounds and lots of smaller and bigger ones hooked and later lost. We have been fishing for tarpon exclusively on all of my trips where Mother Nature allowed us to venture into the Gulf.  Greenbacks have been the bait of choice with threadfin herring a close second. We are using 60 pound test leaders with 9/0 circle hooks.

The reason I mentioned the fish that were 130 pounds, is because I personally believe that is the number where tarpon go from fun acrobatic fighters, to downright nasty gut bruisers. For example, my clients landed a few fish last week from 50-100 pounds. We were using 80 pound ”Power Pro“ spooled onto ”Battle 8000’s“ with 8ft“ Crowder“ rods. Each fish took about 15-30 minutes depending on the angler. Then we hooked one that went 130 pounds on the girth length formula and it took about an hour and a half. These tarpon have personalities and the 130-150 pounders seem to be the young athletes of the species. The tactic on these fish is to not give them a break. If you are not sweating when you are fighting your tarpon, then your tarpon is not sweating fighting you.

I filmed a great video with clients Ken and Chris Francis of ArizonaÉ.  Enjoy
