October 5, 1956 - September 5, 2024
Bradenton, Florida - Janet Marie Hagerty, 67, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully, with family, on the morning of September 5, 2024.
Janet was born on October 5, 1956, in St. Marys, Ohio, to Harold and Evelyn (Tester) Schrolucke, and eagerly welcomed home by her sister, Karen. She was baptized and confirmed, as a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, where she attended for many years. Her childhood memories were always of being happy and content, with loving parents, family, community, and friends. She lived in the same house throughout her childhood and loved to be outside, whether on the porch, riding her bike, hiding in the maple tree, and many other adventures. When she wasn't outside, she might be found upstairs, checking things out in the attic, digging with a spoon in the basement, finding the candy dish, listening to music, or reading.
Her work ethic was evident early on, starting with babysitting and then throughout high school, working at the Truck Stop Restaurant, the library, and St. Marys Hardware. Throughout her school years, she was involved in various endeavors, playing the piano, coronet, and baritone, as well as singing in choir. She was in DECA, becoming President in her senior year, and participating in competitions throughout the country. She graduated from Memorial High School in 1975. In 1976, she married William Hamp and in 1978 welcomed a daughter, Emily Elaine Hamp. In 1983 the family moved to Goshen, Indiana, for two years before heading south in 1985 and finding home to be Bradenton, Florida. In Bradenton, she welcomed the birth of her son, Joshua David Hamp, in 1987. After arriving in Florida, Janet worked in the dry-cleaning business, at Courtesy Cleaners, for a number of years. Always a dedicated employee, she retired from her position as the buyer for Mixon Fruit Farms in 2023, after about 25 years. In 1990, Janet, together with the love of her life, Patrick Hagerty, welcomed the birth of their daughter, Erin Marie Hagerty. In June of 1995 Janet and Patrick were united in marriage, the beginning of a wonderfully rewarding life together, they were a perfect pair.
Always an avid reader, Janet was regularly in the midst of a book and she shared her love of reading with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed a good game of Scrabble and Cribbage and typically had the higher score. In the evenings, she could be found on the porch, visiting with friends and family, or snuggled up with a book or game of CandyCrush. Janet genuinely appreciated a great meal and always made sure everyone was fed, whether making one of her classics or dropping off a surprise quick chick. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends over meals at the house or at any one of her many favorite restaurants. You couldn't leave her house hungry, even if you planned to. Janet always made everyone feel like family and her family meant the world to her. If there was an anniversary or birthday, she knew when it was and she was ready with a card, phone call, or celebration – she never forgot an occasion! When it came to events, she showed up. Grandmaw, so special that there is a second-generation "w" at the end of her name, showed up. Always. Whether it was a performance, sporting event, belt promotion, graduation – she was there to support and cheer on. Where there was a need, she was there. Whether driving her PT Cruiser, or in more recent years, switching gears in her Jeep, she always had a distinct vehicle and most definitely preferred to have a manual transmission! With an unwavering commitment to family, she always knew how to make everything memorable and is famous for her Christmas grab bags and coordinating fun adventures for her grandkids.
Janet was a mentor, friend, and someone to turn to, for everyone who knew her and she made herself available. She was patient and kind, never giving unsolicited advice – and if advice was involved, she would always make sure you came up with it yourself. Her ability to always make everything better and to observe everything around her was amazing, and if you were in the right place with her, a simple exchanged look could share many words. She was a force, with a very special energy, never spoke without contemplation, but had an unmatched quick-wit and humor. She had a knack for being good at everything she did. She was great at sewing, crocheting, and mending, and was known to make a blanket here and there; maybe even a random stuffed animal. She enjoyed her garden and plants, often sharing and gifting plants, flowers, and succulents. Janet often gifted and shared many things, always picking things up and making sure those around her had things they enjoyed. She was a rare person, who genuinely always put others first, from a young age and throughout her entire life.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Patrick Hagerty, her children; Emily (Chris) Castiglioni, Joshua Hamp-Hagerty, and Erin (Mike) Nolan, her grandchildren; Olivia Castiglioni, Fiona Castiglioni, Nicholas Hamp, Hudson Nolan, and Meadow Nolan, all of Bradenton, Florida, her sister; Karen Bennett of Westerville, OH, and many nieces and nephews, friends and family, all of whom will miss her dearly.
