BRADENTON – At Monday’s city council workshop the city clerk informed councilwoman Marianne Barnebey that she must resign from her position on the city council at least 10 days prior to the election date on June 4, 2012. The resignation would take effect next January. That means the ward 2 council position will be open for anyone to who wants to run in the November election for the two years remaining in Barneby’s four-year term.
City attorney Bill Lisch warned Barnebey not to wait until the last minute to submit her resignation to allow for ample time should complications arise. Carl Callahan, city clerk, said he sent a memorandum out to every city department alerting employees of the election legalities.
City council positions Ward 1, currently filled by councilman Gene Gallo, and Ward 5, occupied by Harold Byrd, are also up for re-election.
Callahan said that anyone wishing to run for the Ward 2 position could begin campaigning now, even though the seat won’t officially be open until Barneby’s submission.
Barnebey joined the council in 1998. Last week she announced that she will be challenging Mayor Wayne Poston in the November election.
