BRADENTON — At Tuesday's meeting, BOCC members approved sending a transmittal letter from the commission to the Florida Department of Transportation, requesting permission to allow usage of golf carts on sidewalks adjacent to U.S. 301 in North Manatee County.
Attached to the document is 1,800 letters from Ellenton and Parrish citizens who are tried of jumping in the car every time they want to go somewhere. They want to use their carts instead.
In September of 2014, the Commission adopted Resolution 14-15 "Procedures and criteria relating to the designation of public right-of-way for operating golf carts."
There are designated study areas that the first carts will be allowed, should FDOT approve, but other areas are sure to follow considering the popularity of electric transportation.
Manatee County staff prepared the letter and sent it to District One Secretary, Billy Hattaway, signed by the BOCC Chairman.
Commissioners have long long supported the notion, but FDOT is seldom willing to alter the rules and standards surrounding state roads.
Citizen Glen Gibellina said he has researched the issue and that having a golf cart modified – for streets throughout the county – is reasonably inexpensive, and quick to do.
Gibellina said, "Lights, a windshield and wipers, and some seat belts, then get a tag and go." If the petition isn't successful, Gibellina might want to set-up shop on U.S. 301.
Commissioners are expecting little time will pass before they get their answer.
