LAKEWOOD RANCH – A groundbreaking ceremony in Lakewood Ranch for the construction of the giant 'diverging diamond' traffic routing system for the University Parkway-Interstate 75 area has been delayed.
The ceremony was to be held by the Florida Department of Transportation, which sent out an email Monday explaining that the postponement is due to rain and water-saturated ground. Construction on the diamond officially began on Monday.
The diamond is designed to provide current and future relief for the ever-growing east Manatee County area. Costs for the two-year project are predicted to be up to $74.5 million.
